Georgia Blanks Lipscomb 10-0
March 12, 2021 | Baseball
ATHENS -- Luke Wagner and Nolan Crisp combined on a three-hit shutout while Connor Tate, Riley King and Josh McAllister hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to lead seventh-ranked Georgia to a 10-0 win over Lipscomb Friday.
Georgia (11-3) claimed a 3-0 lead in the first with Corey Collins (3-for-5, HR, 4 RBI), King and McAllister collecting an RBI. Bison freshman right-hander Ike Buxton had not allowed an earned run in his previous two starts. The Bison put runners at the corners with one out in the fourth, and then the Bulldogs turned a double play to maintain a 3-0 edge. In the bottom of the fourth, Collins made it 7-0 with a three-run home run off reliever JT Caver.
In the sixth, Georgia did something it hadn't done since 1987 as it hit three straight home runs. Tate, King and McAllister all went deep to make it 10-0. Chaney Rogers nearly made it four straight blasts when he smacked a double off the right field wall. Meanwhile on the mound, Wagner (3-0) pitched a career-high six innings for the win and Crisp took care of the final three frames for a save. Buxton dropped to 2-1.
Before tonight, the last Bulldog trio to hit back-to-back-to-back home runs were Steve Carter, Derek Lilliquist and Rich Bielski in the first inning off Sam Drake of Georgia Tech on April 29, 1987. Georgia won that day 9-4.
The series continues Saturday with first pitch slated for 1:02 p.m., and the game will be available on SEC Network+ and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

On not having three home runs in a row since 1987...
"They just told me that on the radio, that it has been that long since it's happened. I mean it's pretty rare. It was almost four when Chaney (Rogers) hit the ball to the wall. It is fun to watch those guys swing the bat. I thought early in the game, Riley King hit a ball as hard as you can hit it to right center, and you look up and the flag had stopped blowing. Early in the game it was blowing out a little bit, and then it kind of died down. I thought our guys took really good swings today."
On freshman Luke Wagner....
"He was really good. There were a couple walks, so it wasn't perfect. But it was really good. When you're a freshman out there competing like that- I thought he did a great job. He is a competitor; he is a really good baseball player. He is probably going to play one of these next two games probably in the outfield. He probably won't DH, Corey Collins got that one locked up. But Luke Wagner is a really good baseball player, and he competes like no one else."

On how he feels at the plate right now...
"I feel good. I had an off two days. I just had to get back at it. I came in and worked hard, and I got some extra swings in. I was really fortunate that I started hitting the ball really well again, and I am feeling really comfortable right now."
On what it is like watching three straight home runs from his teammates...
"It is awesome. I think I turn into someone else. I was like I've never seen that in person, so you only see that on T.V. and stuff. But it was so much fun. The dugout was electric."

On how he felt tonight as a Friday Night starter....
"I didn't think much of it but when Webby (Ryan Webb) and Cannon (Jonathan Cannon) were getting on me, I though ok this is a pretty big deal, I am excited for this one. Yeah, it was cool. But I tried to treat it like any other start."
On how important it is to show Coach Stricklin he can push through...
"They say I compete, and I think that it is another showing of why I can be successful. I can compete even when I don't have my A-1 stuff."
