Georgia Earns 13 Invites to NCAA Men’s Championships

March 10, 2021 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia men's swimming and diving team received 13 invitations to the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, as announced by the NCAA Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis.

The NCAA Men's Championships will be held in Greensboro, North Carolina at the Greensboro Aquatic Center on Wednesday, March 24 through Saturday, March 27. Georgia will look to post its fourth top-five finish in program history and the first since 2016. The best finish in school history came in 1997, when the Bulldogs finished third.

The Bulldogs are entering the meet following a historic season in both dual and championship competition. In the dual season, the Bulldogs notched the second undefeated slate in their history, followed up a second-place finish at the SEC Championships that included a school-record 1,324.5 points. During the meet, Georgia won four individual titles and set three school records.

For NCAAs, five Bulldogs were invited in three events: redshirt senior Javier Acevedo, junior Andrew Abruzzo, sophomore Ian Grum, and freshmen Jake Magahey and Luca Urlando.

Magahey, this season's SEC champion in the 200 freestyle and silver medalist in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle, enters the meet as the No. 2 seed in the distance events. Acevedo holds a top-eight seed in each of his three events, led by the No. 5 seed in the 100 backstroke, while Urlando is the seventh seed in both butterfly races.

Seniors Jack Dalmolin and Camden Murphy and sophomores Dillon Downing and Zach Hils each qualified in two events, with Murphy holding the No. 2 seed in the 100 butterfly and Downing ranking fifth in the 50 freestyle. Rounding out the field is senior Greg Reed, junior Keegan Walsh, redshirt sophomore Bradley Dunham, and freshman Tommy-Lee Camblong. Georgia also qualified for all five relays, highlighted by the No. 5 200 medley relay nationally.

Along with the freshman trio of Camblong, Magahey, and Urlando, this is the first NCAA invitation for Dunham, Walsh, and Hils. Dalmolin, Downing, and Grum were selected for last year's championships, but were unable to compete due to the event's cancellation. The 13 swimmers will be joined by senior diver Zach Allen, who qualified on the 1-meter springboard Tuesday at the Zone B Championships in Greensboro.
