Bulldogs Earn Four Medals on Day 2 of SEC Championships

February 24, 2021 | Swimming & Diving

COLUMBIA, Mo. – With four medals won and three school records broken, the University of Georgia men's swimming and diving team leapt to third place in impressive fashion at the SEC Championships Wednesday evening at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.

Through two days of competition, Georgia sits in third place with 424.5 points. Florida leads the field with 571 points, followed by Kentucky in second with 454.

Freshman Jake Magahey highlighted the evening with his silver medal-winning performance in the 500 freestyle. Magahey used a huge burst in the final 200 yards to nearly pull even with Florida's Kieran Smith, finishing with a school record time of 4:06.71. While Smith tied his American record of 4:06.32 in victory, Magahey's A-cut gave him the second-fastest time in history. The mark also bested Sébastien Rouault's 13-year-old school record by nearly three seconds.

Sophomore Dillon Downing also broke the school record in the 50 freestyle, posting an A-cut time of 18.90 in prelims that ranks second nationally. Downing went on to tie for the bronze medal in finals, equaling the third-place time of 19.16 with Brooks Curry of LSU.

In the 200 IM, redshirt senior Javier Acevedo also picked up a bronze medal with a B-cut time of 1:42.17, topping the previous Missouri pool record.

Downing and Acevedo would later team with senior Camden Murphy and freshman Luca Urlando to close the evening with a school record time of 1:16.20 in the 200 freestyle relay, earning Georgia the silver medal. Downing led off the race with a 50 freestyle split of 19.14, while Urlando closed with a 19.30 anchor leg. The quartet previously broke the school record with a time of 1:16.35 at the Georgia Invitational in November.

Elsewhere, Urlando and sophomore Zach Hils finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 200 IM, with each posting top-10 program times, while senior Jack Dalmolin rode his 29.36 breaststroke split to a comeback victory in the C final. In the 50 freestyle, Murphy took the B final with a personal-best time of 19.50, moving into fourth all-time in school history. Finally, in the 500 freestyle, junior Andrew Abruzzo joined seven Bulldogs in scoring with an eighth-place time of 4:18.40.

Georgia returns to the water tomorrow for the third day of action in Columbia, swimming in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and 400 medley relay. Prelims start at 11 a.m. ET, followed by finals at 6 p.m. ET. Both sessions will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
