Hartman and Medley Relay Earn Gold at SEC Championships

February 19, 2021 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – Highlighted by a new school record in the 100 breaststroke, the University of Georgia women's swimming and diving team remained in the title hunt at the 2021 SEC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Friday evening at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

With three podium appearances and 13 individual scoring performances, Georgia finished the evening in fourth place with 670 points. Following three days of competition, Florida holds a narrow lead with 779 points, sitting just eight points ahead of Kentucky.

Sophomore Zoie Hartman earned her second individual gold of the meet and fourth of her career with a school record A-cut of 57.40 in the 100 breaststroke, holding off a strong challenge from Tennessee freshman Mona McSharry to notch her second-straight title in the event. Hartman's time is the fastest in the nation this season and marks the fourth time she has broken the 100 breast record.

"I definitely knew where (McSharry) was," said Hartman following the race. "She's a great competitor and definitely made me go faster today…I just felt confident in what I can do and believed in what I could do."

Hartman added another title later in the meet as she joined seniors Gabi Fa'amausili and Courtney Harnish and freshman Maxine Parker to take the 400 medley relay with an A-cut time of 3:29.41, the second-fastest in program history. After trailing Alabama through the first two legs, Harnish's 51.23 butterfly split helped push the Bulldogs ahead and clinch the team's first SEC relay victory since winning the 400 freestyle relay in 2017.

Harnish added another medal to her career total as she tied for silver in the 200 freestyle relay, tallying a B-cut time of 1:43.58 to share second place with Texas A&M's Chloe Stepanek. Earlier in the day, Harnish became the ninth Bulldog to earn SEC Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, officially receiving the award in a ceremony during Friday evening's session.

Elsewhere in the 200 freestyle, Parker, freshman Sloane Reinstein, and sophomore Jillian Barczyk each posted new personal-best times, with Barczyk taking first in the C final. Junior Portia Brown also prevailed in the C final of the 100 backstroke as Fa'amausili finished sixth and sophomore Millie Sansome notched a season-best time in 15th place.

In the 400 IM, junior Callie Dickinson led the Bulldogs with a 12th-place time of 4:10.34, setting a new PR with junior Maddie Homovich and senior Sammie Burchill also scoring in the event. Additionally, junior Dakota Luther reached the 100 butterfly A final and placed seventh, while fellow junior Tatum Smith placed 10th and set a new PR in prelims.

In Missouri, the women's diving competition concluded Friday with the platform event. Junior Tally Brown led the Georgia divers with a 17th-place score of 204.20, with freshman Meghan Wenzel also scoring in 22nd place with a mark of 182.00. Juniors Kelliann Howell (166.50) and Ellie Crump (152.95) narrowly missed scoring position as they finished 25th and 26th, respectively. In the men's 3-meter prelims, senior Zach Allen picked up points with a 17th-place finish, posting a 315.10 score.

Georgia closes the SEC Championships tomorrow with six events: the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1,650 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay. Allen will also wrap up the diving championships with the men's platform event. Swimming prelims start at 10 a.m., followed by the 1,650 heats at 3:45 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m., while diving starts at noon. Each session will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
