Georgia Earns Bronze on Opening Night of SEC Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – For the second-consecutive year, the University of Georgia women's swimming and diving team opened the SEC Championships with a bronze medal in the 800 freestyle relay, taking third with a season-best time of 6:59.42 Wednesday evening at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
 
In the 800 freestyle relay, senior Courtney Harnish led off with a personal-best 200 freestyle split of 1:42.96, earning an A-cut in the event and ranking eighth in program history. Joined by junior Callie Dickinson and sophomores Jillian Barczyk and Zoie Hartman, the final overall time of 6:59.42 earned an A-cut for Georgia and ranks fifth nationally. Kentucky took first overall in the race with a time of 6:58.58.
 
Earlier in the evening, the 200 medley relay team of seniors Gabi Fa'amausili, Danielle Della Torre, Harnish, and freshman Maxine Parker tallied the second-fastest overall time of 1:35.49, but was disqualified for a false start. Alabama finished first with an A-cut time of 1:34.68.
 
The women's diving championships also opened up Wednesday in Columbia, Missouri with the 1-meter springboard event. Junior Tally Brown posted the Bulldogs' best finish with 241.40 points, finishing in 16th place. Freshman Meghan Wenzel (231.70) and junior Ellie Crump (228.60) also scored for Georgia, finishing 21st and 23rd respectively. Ashley McCool of Florida went to take first in the 1-meter finals.
 
Through the first two events of the meet, Georgia ranks 11th with 54 points.
 
Georgia returns to the water tomorrow for the first full day of competition in swimming, competing in the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay. The diving competition will continue in Columbia with the women's 3-meter and the men's 1-meter. Swimming prelims start at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m., while diving prelims begin at noon and finals open at 7 p.m. Each session will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
