ATHENS — Mathis Debru - a native of Grenoble, France, has signed a national letter of intent with the University of Georgia men's tennis team, head coach Manuel Diaz announced on Monday.
Debru (pronounced Ma-tees De-brew) will be a true freshman during the 2021-22 season.
"We could not be more thrilled to add Mathis to our freshman class of 2021," Diaz said. "Mathis is a big, athletic young man who has tremendous potential. He will be a great addition to our team next year."
Debru is a two-time singles champion on the International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit. He won the Grade 4 in Doorn, Netherlands without dropping a set, while also winning the Grade 4 in Oberentfelden, Switzerland. Among his impressive wins is a victory over ITF No. 13-ranked Arthur Fils and No. 59 Robin Bertrand.
The frenchman started playing national tournaments at the age of 13 and played in European junior tournaments in the U14 age group. He enrolled in the French National Center of Distance Learning and advanced from a ITF Junior ranking of 1100 to a 180 ranking.
Debru is the third signee of Georgia's 2021 class, joining highly-touted prospects Miguel Perez Peña and Thomas Paulsell.
