December 20, 2021 | Volleyball
ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia head women's volleyball coach Tom Black has announced the addition of 6-5 middle blocker Sophie Fischer who will transfer to UGA from Kentucky.Â
Â
"We are thrilled to add Sophie to our program," Black said. "She's a versatile athlete who's clear and focused on what she wants to accomplish both on and off the court. We're beyond excited she can train with us this spring. It's a critical time to develop as a player and a team. Our program got better today. Sophie wants to make an impact and we know she will."
Â
A native of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Fischer was an Under Armour and PrepVolleyball All-American prior to arriving in Lexington. Nation Ford High School won back-to-back South Carolina state championships with Fischer on the outside in 2018 and 2019, the same years she was named the South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year. She was the number 15 recruit in the class of 2020. Fischer played club for Adam Speight and the Carolina Rouge.Â
Â
Fischer was a member of the 2020-21 Wildcats squad that brought home the program's first National Championship. That season, she appeared in eight matches, playing 19 sets, recording 28 kills with a .318 hitting clip on the outside. She contributed seven blocks that season as well. In 2021, Fischer appeared in 10 matches, picking up nine kills on the season. Kentucky has won SEC Championships both seasons Fischer has been in Lexington. Â
Â
Fischer is eligible to arrive in Athens for the Spring 2022 semester and will begin practice with the Bulldogs in January.Â
