ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia graduate defender Kayla Bruster was selected by San Diego Wave FC with the 40th overall pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft Saturday evening in a virtual ceremony.

Bruster is only the second Georgia player to be chosen in the NWSL College Draft, following goalkeeper Ashley Baker, who was picked 20th by Sky Blue FC in 2013. Goalkeeper Michelle Betos was chosen in the fifth round of the 2013 NWSL Supplemental Draft by Seattle Reign FC.

Bruster was a critical member of the Georgia backline for five seasons in Athens, earning All-SEC honors in 2019 (First Team) and 2020 (Second Team). The Atlanta native was also selected for the 2021 United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Third Team. Over her career, she played and started in 79 matches, tallying 7,033 career minutes for the Bulldogs.

This season, Bruster ranked third on the team with 1,686 minutes, helping the Bulldogs only allow 26 goals and 83 corner kicks. She was also a contributor on the offensive end, posting a career-high three shots at College of Charleston and earning her first two assists. The second service set up teammate Mollie Belisle's game-winning overtime goal at No. 5 LSU on Sept. 26.

Bruster was one of five selections made by San Diego, one of two expansion franchises joining the league this season.
