Steve Greer, an All-America defensive lineman at Georgia who eventually served the Bulldog football program as a coach and administrator for nearly 30 years, passed away this morning in Athens.  He was 74.

Greer was a three-year starter for Georgia as a defensive right guard for the Bulldogs from 1967-69.  He played on three bowl teams during his career — Liberty, Sugar and Sun — and was a member of the Bulldogs' 1968 SEC championship team.  A first team All-American and All-SEC performer, Greer was elected the permanent team captain in 1969. That year, he won the Atlanta Touchdown Club award as the Most Valuable Lineman in the Southeast and the Sigma Phi Epsilon Georgia Outstanding Athlete of the Year Award. He was also the recipient of the William K. Jenkins Award as the team's Most Valuable Lineman and Most Outstanding Lineman in the Georgia-Georgia Tech game.  After his senior season, Greer earned invitations to the American Bowl and Hula Bowl post season all- star games.

After earning his undergraduate degree in 1970, Greer spent time in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts.  He returned to UGA as a graduate assistant and obtained his master's degree in 1972.

After a stint on the Auburn coaching staff from 1972-78, Greer returned to Athens in 1979 and joined the Georgia staff as recruiting coordinator and defensive ends coach. He served as defensive line coach and was responsible for the defensive kicking game from 1981-93. During his UGA coaching career, he was part of a staff that led the Bulldogs to the 1980 national championship and three SEC title teams: 1980, '81, '82.

Beginning in 1993, Greer served as recruiting coordinator and administrative assistant and was named Director of Football Operations in 1996. Greer retired following the 2008 season after more than three decades with the Bulldogs as a player, coach and administrator.

A graduate of Greer H.S. (S.C.), he was a two-time South Carolina Class AA Lineman of the Year, Most Valuable Player in the S.C.-N.C. Shrine All-Star game, Most Valuable Lineman in the S.C. North-South All-Star Game and high school All-American.

Greer was inducted into the University of Georgia Circle of Honor in 2014 and the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame in 2019.  He is married to the former Susan Harrill of Greer, SC. They have three sons: Stephen, Jeff, and Michael, and several grandchildren.
