November 04, 2021 | General
ATHENS, Ga. --- Jennifer Carbone Zuccaro, former University of Georgia gymnast, as well as a highly successful pediatric intensive care cardiologist in New York, has been named the recipient of the 2021 Hartman Award. She will be recognized on the field at the football game against Missouri on Saturday, November 6.
Named for the late Bill Hartman, Georgia's longtime kicking coach and chairman of the Georgia Student Educational Fund, the Hartman Award is one of the greatest honors given to a former UGA student-athlete. The Hartman Award has been presented annually since 1992 and recognizes former Georgia student-athletes who have demonstrated excellence in their profession and/or in service to others by 20 or more years of superior performance after graduation. Only former varsity athletes who have received a baccalaureate degree from Georgia can be considered for the award.
Jennifer Carbone Zuccaro continues to bring honor to the University of Georgia and the Georgia gymnastics program in her multi-faceted roles of mother, physician, and community leader.
Graduating from the University of Georgia in 1993, Carbone was a leader and competitor on four SEC Championship teams and the record- breaking 1993 NCAA National Championship team. As a scholar-athlete, she earned SEC and NCAA post-graduate scholarships upon graduation. Carbone attended Emory University Medical School, was a chief resident at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, before earning a double fellowship in emergency pediatric cardiology at UCLA Medical Center.
Upon the birth of her two daughters, Danielle and Sienna, Jenn and her husband, Rick, returned to the Utica, New York area to live closer to family. The consummate leader and team player, Carbone understood the value of creating a work-life balance for her family. Currently, Carbone is a pediatric intensive care cardiologist at Upstate University Hospital as well as a published researcher. She is board certified in Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, and Pediatrics.
While supportive of her two talented daughters with their multitude of activities, Carbone is active in her community raising awareness and money for the American Heart Association. Her husband, Rick, is a very talented musician and the Zuccaro Family often donates instruments to local schools for their music programs.
