Georgia Falls to LSU in Penalties at SEC Tournament

October 31, 2021 | Soccer

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – After a scoreless 110 minutes of play, the University of Georgia soccer team fell to LSU in penalty kicks on Sunday evening at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

Tonight's match marks the fourth time in program history Georgia has gone to penalty kicks, winning the previous three times.

Georgia (11-5-3, 4-4-2 SEC) outshot LSU, 18-14, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on frame. Senior midfielder Abby Boyan led the Bulldogs in shots with six, followed by graduate forward Mollie Belisle who had three. Seniors Dani Murguia and Kayla Bruster, and freshman Danielle Lewin each took two strikes. Senior goalkeeper Emory Wegener had a strong night between the posts. Wegener saved all four LSU shots and kept the Bulldogs' slate clean.

LSU (12-7, 4-6 SEC) opened the offensive attack in the first half, notching three shots within the first 15 minutes. Murguia would take the first chance on frame but was saved by the Tigers' keeper. The Bulldogs would have four more strikes but could not finish. Wegener faced nine shots in the period and saved two that were on net.

Georgia presented itself with multiple offensive chances in the second half of the match. The Bulldogs outshot the Tigers, 10-1, and led in corner kicks, 4-1. Wegener stayed solid as well, shutting out LSU for 90 straight minutes. The two opponents then headed into overtime.

The Bulldog's offense came out in the first overtime period. Holding on to most of the possession, they kept the ball in Tiger territory. Boyan took a last-second strike that was tipped by the LSU keeper, which sent the game into double overtime. Defensively, Georgia stayed strong throughout both periods. LSU had a last-second opportunity and put the ball in the back of the net, but it proved to be too late. The clock ran out before the shot went off and the game went to penalty kicks.

Penalty kicks was determined in six chances from each team. In order, Murguia and Belisle finished, and Wegener stopped the Tigers' second strike. Boyan finished, but Wegener's shot would go high right. Lewin finished, but it was not enough as Madison Haugen's shot was saved and LSU finished on their final opportunity.
