GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Georgia men's tennis freshman Mathis Debru won two singles matches on Thursday to earn a spot in the main draw of the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional.
The Grenoble, France native won his first contest with relative ease, cruising past South Florida's Alvin Tudorica, 6-1, 6-2. In his second match, Debru fell behind early with a 5-7 loss in the first set. He then earned a split before roaring back in a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Miami freshman Casper Christensen, 5-7, 6-2 (13-11).
Debru will now join his teammates in the main draw. Action begins at 8:30 a.m. ET Friday with two rounds of doubles, followed by one round of singles.
Representing the Bulldogs in Gainesville are Hamish Stewart, Philip Henning, Blake Croyder, Miguel Perez Peña, Thomas Paulsell, Erik Grevelius, Britton Johnston and Mathis Debru. Georgia's doubles tandems include the combos of Stewart/Henning, Croyder/Grevelius, Paulsell/Perez Peña and Debru/Johnston.
This weekend's ITA Southeast Regional features players from 15 teams, including Georgia, Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State, Central Florida, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Miami, North Florida, South Florida and Stetson.
