LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team has earned recognition from the United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for outstanding work in the classroom during the 2019-20 academic year.

The USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award is the latest of a number of academic achievements during the year for the Bulldogs volleyball team, including a 3.371 team GPA. Seven members of the team earned spots on the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll and all four members of the freshman class appeared on the SEC First Year Academic Honor including a 4.0 GPA by Londyn Gray in her first year at Georgia.

"The ladies talked about academics being the best way they could represent UGA as soon as athletics were called off, then went out and did just that," said head coach Tom Black. "I'm super proud of their hard work and ability to do great work in uncertain times."

Volleyball was also one of three UGA programs to be recognized by the NCAA for outstanding achievement in the annual NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) report, announced in May.

The AVCA announced a record 1,313 teams earned academic recognition, topping last year's record by almost 200 teams. The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.
