Quick Chat: Que Morrison

Que Morrison is a right-handed shooter that has averaged 7.3 points per game during her Georgia women's basketball career. That number would surely be higher if she hadn't suffered a major knee injury as a sophomore and a right shoulder injury back in February, cutting short her junior season.

While back home in Riverdale, Ga., during the coronavirus pandemic shutdown, the 5-foot-7 guard spent a lot of time rehabbing her shoulder following surgery to repair a torn labrum. She also spent a lot of time playing one-on-one with her younger brother, Juaquine Wright.

Morrison and her teammates are back in Athens now and on Tuesday she picked up for the phone for a Quick Chat. She talked about playing left-handed against her brother, doing a lot of cooking, entering her senior year and much more. Here's some of what she had to say:

Frierson: The obvious question is, what have you been up to these past few months?

Morrison: I've really just been spending more time with my family, of course, and trying to recover from my injury. I had rehab back at home, they were able to get that lined up for me, so that's been the big thing.

Frierson: In terms of rehabbing your shoulder, has this in a way been a good time for you because you've been able to really focus on that without much else going on?

Morrison: That and my schoolwork, for sure. I've been able to recover pretty well having that rehab back at home, without me having to do it through a Zoom call and do it on my own. Having that hands-on ability back home was really good for me.

Frierson: How else are you spending your free time? I'm guessing you haven't had this kind of time in many years.

Morrison: I know, right? In my free time, I'm playing my little brother outside, playing some basketball. At first, I was shooting with my left hand and I would play him with my left hand, but I've really been spending a lot of time with him and my stepdad and my mom.

Frierson: How are you now with your left hand compared to six months ago?

Morrison: I've improved, for sure. My handle should be a little bit tighter.

Frierson: What have these past few years been like for you? You had the great freshman season and then the major knee injury your sophomore year and then the shoulder injury last season, so does it feel like forever ago that you were out there playing at full strength and with full confidence?

Morrison: For sure. I would say going back to my freshman year, I know I haven't had a season like I had that year. It has felt like it's been a minute, but I feel like this year for sure is going to be a good year for me.

Frierson: How weird is it to think that you're going into your senior year? It kind of feels like you and Gabby Connally and Maya Caldwell just got here.

Morrison: [Laughs] I honestly haven't even thought about it like that! Now that you say that, time has flown by. I haven't even thought about it, I've just been enjoying it day-by-day while I can and trying to focus on the task at hand, especially with everything that's going on.

Frierson: How have you changed the most as a person in your time at Georgia?

Morrison: I think I've really matured as a person and I'm just trying to make the best decisions possible for my health and for my teammates. Just having that mindset, my maturity is the biggest thing.

Frierson: How much did you miss being around your teammates and the coaches?

Morrison: Us being back is really great. We actually had a game night where we saw all the coaches and having that game night and that team bonding was really good. Everybody was in one room, still going through the protocols and everything, and it was a fun night. I'd missed that a lot.

Frierson: Did you all pick back up just like no time had passed?

Morrison: Yeah, for sure, that's how connected we are. It was like we were just together and had been together this whole time.

Frierson: I know Gabby has gotten into magic and her card tricks during the shutdown, so have you picked up any new hobbies?

Morrison: I haven't been able to pick up any new hobbies just because I've been mainly focusing on my health and my shoulder. Especially with it being my shooting arm, I feel like that's really important to me. This past year my shooting percentage went up and I've just been focusing on recovery.

Frierson: What was it like being back home for a couple of months? Did it feel like you were back in high school again?

Morrison: Yeah, a little bit. It was good; I really love being around my little brother, he's my everything and he swears he's better than me [laughs]. I just liked being home around him a lot.

Actually, when I think about it, I cooked pretty often. I started cooking more because my mom got me an air fryer, so I was able to cook and do some things on my own without having any assistance. Cooking is something new that I have been doing during this time.

Frierson: If you had to cook dinner for your teammates, what would you make?

Morrison: A grilled chicken salad with jalapeños wrapped in bacon, with cheese inside.

Frierson: What was it like doing the last part of spring semester online?

Morrison: It was nothing new to me, honestly. Having all the classes online was different, but I've always had online classes. I had a couple of online classes so when everything went online it was like, OK, I just have to check in more because of all the different classes, and you get all these different emails. It was just a lot more checking in.
