McGarity's Minutes - June 23

June 23, 2020 | General

Good afternoon:

As we continue to navigate our world of COVID-19 and our efforts to strengthen humane connections and interactions within our community, there is good news to report on the Bulldog front.

Major League Baseball conducted its draft earlier this month and Emerson Hancock became only the fourth student in the history of the University of Georgia to earn First Team Academic All-America honors AND be a first round pick in the MLB draft by the Seattle Mariners.  The very next day, Cole Wilcox was selected by the San Diego Padres in the third round.  Cam Shepherd and Tucker Bradley also signed free agent contracts with Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals, respectively.

Congratulations to former Bulldog golfer Chris Kirk, who won at the Korn Ferry Tour's King and Bear Classic in St. Augustine this past weekend.

Sticking with golf notes, rising senior Spencer Ralston played in his first PGA Tour event, the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links. Ralston missed the cut by one stroke at 3-under after rounds of 69-70.

We continue to have former Bulldog student-athletes like Ace Levy and Alexis Kendricks excel in public service and we invite you to read about their outstanding accomplishments in the following links.

Our football team is currently on campus for voluntary workouts, which will run through July 14, 2020.  On July 15, 2020, football will transition into the "summer access" phase, which includes eight hours of weight training and conditioning and film review. On July 26, 2020, walk-throughs and meetings will be added to allowable activities, which will lead up to pre-season practice starting on August 9, 2020.

Regarding the 2020 football season, we understand there are so many questions surrounding attendance, tailgating, safety, hygiene, cleanliness, etc.  Our goal is to be able to communicate our plan for the season in early August.  We want to wait as long as possible to make these important decisions and ask for your patience during this process.  Time is on our side right now, and we want to be able to have the latest information available to inform and educate everyone on the 2020 season.

In the meantime, let us continue to follow all state and local guidelines to help stop the spread of the virus.

Take care and Go Dawgs!
