Gymdogs 2020 Season Recap

May 21, 2020 | Gymnastics

ATHENS, Ga. --- The 2020 season was one that saw a consistent build for Georgia gymnastics, but with one meet remaining and post season on the horizon, the GymDogs learned their season would be cut short due to COVID-19.

With tears and disappointment, but also pride, the GymDogs reflected on their 2020 season. They had overcome many obstacles and continued to work toward their visions, becoming a stronger team together.

At the end of the 2020 season the GymDogs were ranked 12th, with all four apparatuses also ranked in the Top 25- floor and beam ranked seventh and eighth, respectively.

Georgia was one of the first six schools in the country to hit a 197.325 or higher in 2020.  They achieved this mark in the third week against Iowa State and at the time it was the third best score in the SEC.

A few weeks later against Auburn, the GymDogs notched the highest event score of the Kupets Carter era after scoring five 9.900s or better to post a 49.600 on floor.

The team suffered injuries throughout the season, but the gymnasts continued to step up to the challenge and face the adversity.  Three freshmen hit six scores of 9.900 or better for their routines and eight returning gymnasts scored 16 career-best scores on their way to earning 26 total event titles throughout the season.

Senior Sabrina Vega was tabbed an ESPN Top-10 "Should Go Viral" floor routine and earned back-to-back SEC Specialist of the Week honors after performances against Auburn and at Arkansas.  She finished the season ranked 9th in the nation on floor with an NQS score of 9.930 and earned WCGA regular-season All-America honors.

The GymDog faithful supported the team throughout the season, totaling 47,572 in attendance.  There was an average of 9,515 fans at each meet, which ranked fourth in the nation.

GymDogs received team awards at the end of year virtual banquet.  Freshman Loulie Hattaway earned the Scholar-Athlete award for her tremendous efforts in the classroom.  Sophomore Rachel Baumann was given the Kathy McMinn Consistency award and freshman Amanda Cashman received the Sheehan Spirit award.  Senior Rachel Dickson was honored with the Suzanne Yoculan "No Dream Too Big" Award and Vega was named this year's MVP.  A new award was given this year in honor of the late Jenny Vandenberg- an award for inspiration that went to sophomore Rachael Lukacs.
