Koch Earns Master Of Strength & Conditioning Honor

May 20, 2020 | General

ATHENS, Ga. — Katrin Koch, Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports at University of Georgia, has earned distinction as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa). The recognition is the highest given in the strength and conditioning coaching profession.

"We are proud of Katrin and the national recognition from CSCCa," said Darrice Griffin, UGA's Deputy Director of Athletics - Administration. "While technically proficient in the strength and conditioning discipline, what separates Katrin from her peers is her commitment to the development of our student-athletes as leaders. Katrin's student-athlete lab is about so much more than physical gains and physical development. She challenges and empowers our students to perform in all aspects of their lives. For her dedication and commitment to the holistic development of our students, she is so deserving of this honor."

Due to the cancellation of the CSCCa's National Conference this year, Koch will be honored at the organization's meeting in May 2021. Only 220 strength and conditioning coaches at the collegiate and professional levels have received the award since the organization's inception in 2000. Koch is one of 22 females to be honored and is the third member of the current UGA strength and conditioning staff to earn the distinction, joining Scott Sinclair and Sean Hayes.

"This is an incredible honor for Katrin," Dr. Chuck Stiggins, Executive Director of the CSCCa, said. "Being named a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach signifies a commitment to the student athlete, the University of Georgia Athletic Program and the strength and conditioning profession. We are honored to have Coach Koch as a member of our association and to have her join the ranks of the Master Strength and Conditioning Coaches. She is truly a model of an outstanding strength and conditioning professional."

Koch sports more than a quarter-century of professional experience at Indiana and Georgia. Since her arrival in Athens in 2004, Koch has worked with teams which won eight NCAA Championships, 16 SEC regular-season championships and five SEC Tournament titles. Koch worked at Indiana, her alma mater, from 1993-04 and oversaw strength and conditioning with teams which won three NCAA Championships and 21 Big Ten titles.

Koch was an NCAA Champion in two sports for the Hoosiers and was inducted into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. She won the shot put at the 1992 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and also was an NCAA Weightlifting Champion. All told, Koch was a nine-time All-American and a five-time Big Ten Champion in the shot put and discus.

Koch received two degrees from IU, a bachelor's in Fine Arts (studio art) and Art History in 1993 and a master's in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sports Psychology in 1997. A native of Neuffen, Germany, she is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. She holds additional certifications by the USA Weightlifting Federation and National Academy of Sports Medicine.
