HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Freshman Caroline Craig shot 1-under 70 in the final round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Sunday and finished tied for 10th individually at Long Cove Club.
The Georgia women's golf team posted a 293 in the final round and tied for 14th in the elite field which featured 13 of the nation's top-25 team. The Bulldogs' Sunday score was comprised of a 72 from freshman Caterina Don, a 73 from sophomore Jo Hua Hung, a pair of 74s from sophomore Jenny Bae and freshman Céleste Dao.
"As a team, you want to close well no matter how you have played," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We had our best round of the tournament today, which is exactly what you hope for. We have a group of players who have competed and won at the highest levels. They showed today who we really are and helped us end the tournament on a positive note."
Unfortunately, Craig's score did not count in Georgia's team tally because she was competing as an individual. In fact, Craig's performance over the weekend would have lowered the Bulldogs' team tally by 17 strokes.
"It's very impressive that Caroline came down here and played like she did against what is probably one of the toughest individual fields of any tournament in the country this spring," Brewer said. "She played her best golf today to finish in the top 10 and was really in position to have a top-6 or top-7 finish. In California a couple of weeks ago, she was very close to having a top-20 or top-15 finish. She continues to get better and solidify herself as someone who can make us better."
Craig teed off from No. 10 and played the back side of the course at 1-under. After beginning her day with a birdie, she bogeyed No. 14 but regained that stroke with a birdie at No. 17.
Craig's front side was a more adventurous. She birdied No. 1 to move to 2-under but then notched consecutive bogeys at No. 2 and No. 3. Following a par, she birdied No. 5 and No. 6 to get back to 2-under but wrapped up her loop with a bogey at No. 1.
No. 7 Wake Forest closed with a 4-under 280 en route to a dominating 26-shot win over the field. Demon Deacon Emilia Migliaccio earned medalist honors at 1-under 212, a shot better than Furman's Natalie Srinivasan.
For Georgia, Bae tied for 33rd at 224, Hung tied for 60th at 231, Don tied for 63rd at 233, freshman Candice Mahe tied for 72nd at 236 and Dao tied for 79th at 238.
Georgia will return to action in two weeks when the Bulldogs host the 48th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on March 20-22 at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Many of the nation's top teams are in the field, getting a look at the same UGA layout that will host an NCAA Regional later this spring on May 11-13.
