RIO MAR, P.R. — The Georgia women's golf team posted a 4-over 292 in Sunday's opening round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, placing the Bulldogs in a tie for fifth on the team leaderboard at the Rio Mar Country Club's River Course.
"It was a good day," head coach Josh Brewer said. "Some of us haven't competed in close to 100 days, and I there were a couple of shots where you could see that lack of tournament competition hurt us. But it was the first day of the spring season so that's always to be expected. I would give us an A- or a B+. It was a good way to start the spring, but we all know we can do much better."
Sophomore Jenny Bae's 1-under 71 paced Georgia. The Bulldogs also counted a pair of 73s from freshmen Caterina Don and Candice Mahe and a 75 by sophomore Jo Hua Hung. Freshman Céleste Dao's 78 was Georgia's drop score, while freshman Caroline Craig, who is competing individually, shot 74.
"Jenny won qualifying," Brewer said. "For her to come out and lead us on day one shows she was ready in Athens and ready when we got here. Her play at home carried over, and that's a really good sign. Caterina had a good day, and Candice was very solid in her Georgia debut. We feel very confident heading into the final two days."
Overall, Bae is tied for sixth in the individual field, three shots off the pace of Purdue's Sifat Sagoo. Don and Mahe are tied for 16th, Craig is tied for 28th, Hung is tied for 35th and Dao is tied for 59th.
Bae turned at 2-over by mixing a bogey at No. 3, a birdie at No. 5 and a double-bogey at No. 8. She was back and forth on the back side. Bae got back to even with birdies at No. 11 and No. 12 but gave one of those strokes back with a bogey at No. 15. She went birdie-bogey at No. 15 and No. 16 before completing her loop with a pair of birdies to reach a red number at the end of the day.
No. 14 Oklahoma State shot the best team tally, a 3-under 285. Rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 22 Virginia Tech and Purdue both at 288, No. 21 Kentucky at 291, the Bulldogs and Northwestern at 292, Texas Tech at 296, Augusta at 299, N.C. State at 301 and Iowa State at 304.
Georgia will be paired with Kentucky and Northwestern for Monday's second round. Play will begin with an 8:00 a.m. shotgurn start, with the Bulldogs opening on holes Nos. 4-7. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
