ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia's Caroline Craig and Isabella Holpfer are tied for the individual lead and helped the No. 6-ranked Georgia women's golf team surge to the top of the team leaderboard after the opening round of the 48th annual Liz Murphey Fall Collegiate Classic on Friday. Craig and Holpfer both signed for 3-under 69s to pace the Bulldogs to an even-par 288 at the UGA Golf Course.
"It's the first time this fall we've been leading after day one," head coach Josh Brewer said. "They've worked hard. Our qualifying has been a grind. It's nice to see them rewarded. Caroline and Isabella both had pretty special rounds to start the and really put themselves in position individually. They're leading and helped give us a four-shot lead heading into day two."
Craig and Holpfer both posted their career-best scores as Bulldogs and are tied with Tennessee's Mikayla Bardwell atop the individual field. Craig equaled her previous best score in the second round of The Molly in the fall of 2019. Holpfer, a freshman from Vienna, Austria, notched her first red number for Georgia.
The Bulldogs also counted a 74 from Jo Hua Hung and 76 from Jenny Bae, with Caterina Don's 77 serving as the drop score. Georgia's "Black" team posted a 305 on Friday and is 11th, receiving scores of 74 from Gabriela Coello, 76 from Céleste Dao, 77 from Alison Crenshaw, 78 from Candice Mahe and 87 from Zoë Walker.
Overall, Coello and Hung are tied for 19th, Bae and Dao are tied for 38th, Crenshaw and Don are tied for 46th, Mahe is tied for 51st and Walker is 60th.
" It's really nice to see everyone have the chance to compete and take advantage of that opportunity to post low numbers on their home golf course," Brewer said. "I think it speaks about our depth and our qualifying. You've got players who in the six, seven and eight spots who have played a lot of golf for us. We think qualifying is just as hard as tournaments."
There is a four-way tie for second on the team leaderboard trailing the Bulldogs, with No. 1 LSU, No. 10 Tennessee, No. 11 Vanderbilt and No. 18 Mississippi State all four shots back at 292. No. 7 Auburn is sixth at 293, followed by No. 2 Arkansas and No. 14 Kentucky tied for seventh at 296.
Craig had a relatively quiet front side, posting a birdie at No. 2 and eight pars to turn at 1-under. Back-to-back birdies at No. 10 and No. 11 and another birdie at No. 15 pushed her to 4-under. After a double-bogey at No. 16, Craig immediately birdied No. 17 to regain one of those strokes and then parred No. 18.
"Today, I knew I had an opportunity, and I really wanted to take advantage of it," Craig said. "I feel like I did that today, and it was a good start. I knew that every single hole was an opportunity. I hit 13 our of 14 fairways, and that really helped, keeping it out of the rough. I only missed one green so I constantly had the chance to putt, which takes a lot of stress off the round. I just tried to stay really patient and positive. I just really tried to stay in the moment. I converted a lot of putts, but I still had a lot of putts out there. I had a few putts inside 13 feet for birdie and hopefully a few more of those will fall tomorrow."
Holpfer eagled No. 2, a 376-yard, par-4, to jump start her round. She birdied No. 5 but gave two shots back with a double-bogey at No. 8. On the back side, Holpfer birdied No. 12 and No. 13 to return to 3-under and remained there with five consecutive pars to complete her loop.
"I got off to a good start and holed out at No. 2," Holpfer said. "I didn't see it go in, but Josh was up on the green and saw it so I knew. I would say it was a confidence booster. It was a really good shot, and it just gave me confidence for the third hole. I think my putting was pretty good and if I missed a green, my chips and putts were pretty good so I made a few up and downs where I could save myself for par."
The Bulldogs will be paired with the Commodores and Volunteers for Saturday's second round, teeing off between 9:25-10:09 a.m. from No. 1. Georgia's "Black" team will begin at No. 10 in waves between 9:29-10:13 with Alabama and Missouri. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
"We'd really like to make a statement and win tomorrow and then win Sunday," Brewer said. "We believe we're the best team here and we should be able to do that on your home golf course. We'll see if we can handle leading a golf tournament. It's a new position for us. We'll learn a little bit more about ourselves in 24 hours."
"Since we're playing at home, that's even more motivating," Holpfer said. "We still have two more days, and we've got to take it shot by shot and trust we'll do our best."
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the only spectators allowed to attend the tournament are admitted via "Player Pass List."
