Georgia Women Earn Top Ranking in CSCAA Poll

November 18, 2020 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – Following an impressive open to its season, the University of Georgia women's swimming and diving team was voted the No. 1 team in the country by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Thursday morning.

This is the first No. 1 ranking for the program since reaching the top spot on Jan. 27, 2016. Despite falling behind Stanford in the final 2016 season poll, the Bulldogs went on to top the Cardinal at the 2016 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta.

After beginning the season ranked fourth, Georgia (3-0) opened the season with three dominant wins over SEC foes South Carolina, Florida, and Auburn. The Bulldogs currently own the nation's fastest times in five events and have earned multiple SEC honors, including Swimmer of the Week for sophomore Zoie Hartman and Freshman of the Week for Maxine Parker. An outstanding senior class, featuring Courtney Harnish, Gabi Fa'amausili, Danielle Della Torre, and Olivia Anderson, has been key to the team's early success, with the quartet contributing 14 individual race wins in dual competition.

In addition to the women's top ranking, the Georgia men moved up five spots from No. 8 to No. 3 in the new CSCAA poll. Powered by their strong depth, the Bulldogs have been impressive in three early victories, most notably a 165.5-134.5 victory over then-No. 3 Florida on Oct. 30. Senior Javier Acevedo and freshman Jake Magahey have both been named SEC Swimmer of the Week, while freshman Luca Urlando has earned back-to-back Freshman of the Week honors and senior Zach Allen was named Diver of the Week on Oct. 7.

Georgia's season continues today with the second day of competition in the Georgia Invitational at Gabrielsen Natatorium. Prelims began this morning at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by diving at noon and finals at 5 p.m. Live coverage of each session will be available on SEC Network+, with results available on GeorgiaDogs.com and to subscribers on the MeetMobile app.
