October 28, 2020 | Cross Country

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia senior Samantha Drop has been named the Southeastern Conference Cross Country Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, according to a league announcement on Wednesday.

Drop, a native of Durham, Conn., is the first Bulldog woman to win this honor in cross country, an accolade that began in the conference in 2014.  Her twin sister, Jessica Drop, earned the 2020 SEC Indoor Track & Field Women's Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year in February.

Dating back to the Bulldogs' first SEC Scholar-Athlete award in track and field and cross country in 2007, Samantha Drop is the ninth member of the program to collect the honor, including Bryan Kamau who was the 2017 SEC Cross Country Men's Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Drop has a 3.99 GPA in Nutritional Science with a minor in Animal Science.  She was named to the 2017-18 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team and is a five-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic All-District Team selection.  Drop earned the Joel Eaves Scholar-Athlete Award this year for being the UGA female student-athlete with highest GPA entering the fall semester of her senior year.

Drop is a four-time winner of the UGA Women's Track & Field Scholar-Athlete Award for having the team's highest GPA and has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester.  The Presidential Scholar is a two-time NCAA Cross Country Championships qualifier and was a 2017 NCAA Cross Country All-American.  In addition, she captured the 2017 NCAA South Regional title in cross and is a three-time All-Region performer.

In the only regular season cross meet this year, Drop was the team leader placing seventh overall in the 5k race at the Florida State Invitational on Oct. 2 in Tallahassee, Fla.

Up Next: Drop and her teammates travel to Baton Rouge, La., on Wednesday in anticipation of Friday's SEC Cross Country Championships.  Drop has finished in the top 25 at the SEC Championships three times since 2016, including an eighth-place showing in 2019 and a fifth-place finish in 2017.
