COLUMBIA, S.C. — Freshman Erik Grevelius and graduate transfer Billy Rowe each recorded a combined 2-0 record in doubles and singles to highlight day one of the SEC Shootout for the University of Georgia men's tennis team Friday afternoon.
"We fought hard everywhere and put ourselves in positions to win the first set in the top three [singles] spots," Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. "We must do better there. Great job by Billy [Rowe] and Erik [Grevelius] going 2-0 for the day. Baptiste [Anselmo] and Blake [Croyder] played good matches today and just came up a little short in the third set. We get another opportunity to improve tomorrow."
Georgia began the day with fierce doubles battles on all four courts. In his Bulldog debut, Rowe teamed up with Grevelius on court three. While it was the pair's first time playing together, the duo controlled the match and staved off Aggies Hady Habib and Stefan Storch, 8-4. The win marks Rowe's first victory as a Georgia Bulldog.
On court two, Georgia's sophomore duo of Philip Henning and Blake Croyder topped Texas A&M's Noah Schachter and Valentin Vacherot. Despite falling in the first set, Henning and Croyder grabbed three-straight sets to put them back on track and eventually pull out a 8-6 win.
Despite struggling in singles with dropped matches on the top three courts, Grevelius and Rowe once again provided a boost for the Bulldogs with wins on courts five and six, respectively.
After dropping a close first set to Noah Schachter (TAMU), Grevelius forced a third set to win, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, and also finish the day 2-0 in singles and doubles. One court over on six, Rowe also secured a perfect 2-0 finish for the day with his win over Texas A&M's Guido Marson. Rowe ousted Marson in a third-set feud by a score of 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
The Bulldogs return to the courts tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 24) at 9:30 a.m. ET when they take on Florida.
