Kianna Young spent a lot of time in the kitchen during quarantine, making all kinds of desserts while she was home with her family in Corpus Christi, Texas. She also did a lot of bike riding and enjoyed her time outside.
On Saturday, the fifth-year senior Georgia volleyball player and the rest of the Bulldogs will finally start their pandemic-altered season, opening up against South Carolina at Stegeman Coliseum, followed by another match against the Gamecocks on Sunday.
During a recent Quick Chat, the 6-foot-2 middle blocker talked about keeping busy at home this spring, her favorite dessert, life at the beach and much more. Here's some of what she had to say:
Frierson: What did you get a lot better at during the quarantine shutdown? Did you pick up any new hobbies or anything?
Young: I like to take pictures. A couple of years ago I bought a camera and started taking pictures, like, here at the little zoo (Bear Hollow), I'd gone to the Fernbank museum (in Atlanta) a couple of times, so then I kind of got back into that in quarantine because there was time to do it. People weren't around so it was fine to go be in nature and that was fun.
I also bought a bike. I know a lot of people bought exercise equipment and I did a lot of bike riding. That was a lot of fun and also kept me in shape for volleyball. I kind of got into cooking again. I cook normally for myself, but my sister really loves cooking so we got into a dessert a week, which was kind of bad (health-wise) for the family but that was something we got into.
Frierson: What was your best dessert?
Young: We do a Texas sheet cake, it's kind of like a brownie and a cake, super flat and really high in sugar. [Laughs] That was probably one of my favorite things that we made. My sister and I did a cake-off of sorts in different weeks because that's too much cake for one family. She had done something really colorful, with lots of sparkles, and I had done something a little simpler with a German chocolate kind of thing.
I just love Texas sheet cake so that's always going to be my favorite dessert, no matter what time of year it is.
Frierson: Say you invite two of your teammates over for dinner, what are you cooking for them?
Young: It's got to be something with pasta, I love pastas. It would probably be something like a chicken alfredo, that would be good. It's heavy enough for everyone but light enough that you can also stop if you want — but you've got to keep going. Some good biscuits; I'm not a huge fan of salads but I would cater to people.
Frierson: What was it like being home throughout the spring? Did you feel like you were in high school again?
Young: It was very weird because other than holidays I hadn't spent that much time with my family in forever. It was definitely weird because my sister and I switched rooms as I was leaving for college, so my room is her old room so it feels different every time I come back. My room is the storage room in a sense, so every time I go back it's like, sorry, we have to clean this out for you.
It was weird to actually get to move back into my room instead of staying there for a month or so. It was an adjustment that I liked, I actually got to choose my own bed sheets for once, so it was kind of nice. It was so nice spending time with family. You don't feel homesick until you go home and then you realize what you've been missing.
Frierson: If you could travel anywhere in the world on somebody else's dime, where would you like to go and who would you take with you?
Young: I guess it's kind of weird but I've always wanted to go to Machu Picchu (in Peru). For some reason, I don't know anything about it, I've just seen pictures of it and it looks really cool. I like the idea of the whole trek up the mountains.
As for who I would take, I think, realistically, it would be best to take my dad. He would get me there, make sure everything's safe and I know he likes to hike and do stuff. And he'd be easy to travel with.
Frierson: When you think of home, when you think of Corpus Christi, what comes to mind?
Young: The beach, lots of Whataburger and lots of heat.
Frierson: When you haven't been home that much over the past few years and you find yourself there for months this spring, did you find yourself doing things like you did as a kid? Did you ever surf or do other water sports?
Young: We like to go into the ocean, but I'm also kind of scared [laughs]. We do have sharks, I think they're bull sharks or black-tip sharks; they're not too common but every time we go out there someone's catching one on the jetty, so we've always been cautious of the water. I never did surfing. For a birthday party, someone tried (to teach me), but that's not my thing.
At the beach we usually just go sit out. We go over to the jetties and look for crabs in the rocks, and it's fun for seashell hunting.
Frierson: What's something your teammates are into that you just don't get?
Young: "Grey's Anatomy." It's weird, they love it for some reason and I'm more of a "House" or "ER" kind of person. I think that might stem a little more from the drama of the show. They're always like, "Have you seen this episode of 'Grey's'? " And I'm like, "I'm sorry, I can't."
Frierson: Are there any other older shows like "ER" that you're into?
Young: I like "The X-Files." I love "The X-Files," Mulder and Scully are so much fun. ... There's also a movie, "Labyrinth," for some reason, with David Bowie, that's one of my favorite movies. It's so weird, the practice effects are not great, but for some reason it's really charming and fun to watch.
