ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia men's tennis team will face some of the top players in the nation as the squad heads to Miami, Fla., for the 2020 Miami Spring Invitational this weekend.
All the action begins Friday and runs through Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. No. 19-ranked Georgia is one of four schools competing in this year's event, joining players from No. 2-ranked and defending national champion Texas as well as Wisconsin and Miami.
On Friday, the Bulldogs will play singles matches against players from the University of Miami, beginning at 9 a.m. ET. Georgia will then go against doubles tandems from the University of Wisconsin at 1 p.m. ET.
"This is a great way for us to begin our spring season." head coach Manuel Diaz said. "We have a young team that is hungry and anxious to get started. This event gives us an opportunity to go against some really great competition before we begin the dual-match season. We are excited and ready to get back on the court."
Georgia returns eight of 11 letterwinners to go along with another top-5 signing class this. Among the Bulldogs' returners is Philip Henning, who finished the fall season ranked No. 12 nationally in singles after compiling an 11-4 record, including a 4-2 mark against ranked opponents. Henning and fellow sophomore Blake Croyder are also ranked No. 17 nationally in doubles.
The Bulldogs' trio of talented freshmen enter their first season in Athens after an impressive fall. Tyler Zink became the first Bulldog in 13 years to win the U.S. Open Junior Doubles title, while Erik Grevelius boasted a team-best 12-5 singles. Grevelius finished the autumn season with five-straight wins.
Senior Robert Loeb, who was a 2017 ITA All-American and first-team All-SEC performer, returns to help lead his team this year. Loeb has recorded 56 singles victories and 78 doubles wins in his three and a half years with the program.
Following this weekend's action, Georgia hosts Kennesaw State on Monday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs' dual-match schedule features four matchups against teams currently ranked in the ITA top-10.
