Georgia Soccer 2019 Season Preview
August 15, 2019 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. ---The 2019 University of Georgia soccer team looks to build on the experience gained from a young squad last season. There's a spirit and intensity from coaches and student-athletes that's echoing in the locker room and on the field, providing a constant energy to keep striving for higher goals.
That competitive drive has the Bulldogs working together as one, with growth and maturity, as the 2019 season gets set to kick off.
Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne and his staff will work with a team of 33 players, consisting of two seniors, 11 juniors and sophomores, and nine freshmen. The Bulldogs return all eleven starters to the lineup, and this year's team is set to show that mental and physical growth is on the horizon.
Juniors lead the charge for the Bulldogs with leading scorer Reagan Glisson, midfielder/forward Katie Ralys, and defender Caroline Chipman returning to the field.
The seasoned sophomores hope to bring more fight and edge as they spread across the field at all positions. Highlighting that crew is defender and 2018 SEC All-Freshman selection Cecily Stoute, midfielder Abby Boyan, and goalkeeper Emory Wegener.
Throughout the 2018 season, opponents scored only 19 goals against Wegener, which is tied for fifth fewest goals allowed when playing a minimum of 800 minutes. She also recorded five shutouts, ranking ninth in career shutouts after only one season
Fans can get a look at the 2019 squad on Friday, August 16 as the Bulldogs host Duke for an exhibition game at the UGA Soccer Complex at 6 p.m.
The 2019 season officially kicks off at Purdue on Thursday, August 22. The home opener for the Bulldogs is set for Sunday, August 25 against Binghamton at 1 p.m.Admission is free.
