ATHENS, Ga. --- A celebration of life for longtime University of Georgia athletic trainer Warren Morris will be held Sunday, June 2, at 3:00 p.m. in the West End Zone Club at Sanford Stadium.

Morris died on April 28 at the age of 87.

"Warren served as an athletic trainer at the University of Georgia for 30 years," said UGA Director of Sports Medicine Ron Courson. "Nationally recognized for his expertise, he helped countless student-athletes throughout his career and left a phenomenal legacy.  Warren laid the foundation upon which the University of Georgia sports medicine program was built, and I feel honored and blessed to be able to follow in his footsteps and grow and develop the program."

Morris served as head trainer from 1965 until 1992 when he took over the overall athletic rehabilitation program with the UGA Athletic Association. He retired from UGA in 1995.

Born in Boone, Iowa, Morris had served as an assistant trainer at North Carolina for 10 years when UGA head football coach Vince Dooley hired him in 1965 to join Dooley's new regime in Athens.

While at Georgia, Morris served as President for District 9, National Athletic Trainers Association, from 1971-72, and also represented the National Athletic Trainers Association of all colleges and high schools at the NCAA Football Rules Committee. Morris also served as Chairman of the Board of Georgia Athletic Trainers and as secretary and chairman of the SEC sports medicine committee.

He was inducted into the National Trainers Hall of Fame in 1981. In 1985, Morris was named the recipient of the American Society of Orthopedic Sports Medicine Award for Distinguished Service to Sport Medicine and in 1988, he received the Georgia State Sports Hall of Fame Award for Service to Sports.

He was one of 10 children born to George S. and Thelma H. (Morgan) Morris on March 20, 1932. He is survived by his steadfast wife and friend of more than 30 years, Debra (Granner), and brothers-in-law, Charles (Sherry), John Courtney (Alice) and Jeffrey and his two adoring children, Cory and Kasie; Warren's children, Benjy, Joel (Lisa) and Diana (Ed) Broussard) and their children, Victoria, Sean, and Christopher; and, seven surviving siblings,  JoAnn, Helen (Bob), Lois, Marilyn, Paul, Phil (Betty) and Gale (Judy) along with numerous loving nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Hubbard Cemetery, Hubbard, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the Morris family requests that donations be made to the University of Georgia Foundation in the name of Warren Morris. Checks may be made payable to the UGA Foundation with the support fund of Athletic Sports Medicine, fund number 8103500.
