February 17, 2019 | Men's Golf
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico --- The 14th-ranked Georgia men's golf team stands second after one round of the 27th annual Puerto Rico Classic.
On Sunday on the par-72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Beach and Spa Resort's River Course, the Bulldogs fired a 6-under 282. Georgia is two shots behind NC State (8-under 280) and one ahead of Georgia Tech (5-under 283).
Junior Trevor Phillips paced the Bulldogs on Sunday with a 4-under 68. He stands second individually, a shot in back of Stephen Franken of NC State. Phillips notched six birdies on Sunday, including four over his last six holes.
Junior Spencer Ralston and freshmen Will Kahlstorf and Trent Phillips each signed for a 1-under 71 and are 14th individually. Sophomore Davis Thompson had the Bulldogs' non-counting score of 3-over 75.
"It feels good to get off to a good start," Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. "We had been playing well before coming down, so it was great to see us continue that. But we know there is plenty of room for improvement, and that's what we'll looking for the next couple of days."
Junior Will Chandler fired a career-low 2-under 69 to land second after one round of the Puerto Rico Individual Classic on Rio Mar's Ocean Course (par 71, 6,782 yards). Chandler is three strokes shy of Thomas Johnson of Oklahoma.
The Puerto Rico events will continue on Monday and will conclude on Tuesday. Georgia will be paired with NC State and Georgia Tech in the 8 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring can be found here.
