ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia's Caterina Don will represent Italy in the 2019 Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship beginning Thursday at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas. The tournament, which runs through Saturday, features many of the world's top amateurs from 19 countries and six continents.
The format features two men's and two women's golfers from each country. Don, who is currently ranked No. 22 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, will captain the team from Italy, which also features Virginia Bossi, a freshman at Virginia; Pietro Bovari, also a freshman at Virginia; and Giovanni Manzoni, a sophomore at Lynn University.
Don recently completed her first fall season at Georgia. In September, she became the first Georgia golfer to win her collegiate debut since 1998. Don shot 9-under 135 in the rain-shortened Minnesota Invitational to earn medalist honors. In four fall events, she posted a 70.91 stroke average and covered 11 rounds at a combined 9-under. Don notched par-or-better scores in seven of those 11 rounds.
The 54-hole, four-ball stroke play competition will feature three concurrent competitions: international team, men's team and women's team. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the top finisher in each competition.
The 19 countries in the field are Argentina, Australia, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. Seventeen of the 76 golfers are currently ranked among the top 100 in the world.
The tournament began in 2001 and is traditionally held every other year. The 2019 event will be the first since 2015, as the 2017 tourney was cancelled due to Hurricane Harvey. Prominent alums of the Spirit International include women's golfers such as Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer and Brooke Henderson and men's players Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Francesco Molinari.
The Spirit Golf Association, a charity that is dedicated to the promotion of amateur golf for the benefit of health-related causes, has contributed more than $12 million to its charitable activities.
