ATHENS, Ga. — University of Georgia men's tennis sophomore Philip Henning resurged after a slow start to take the win in his Round of 64 match Wednesday afternoon during the first day of the 2019 ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, Calif. The victory advances the South Africa native to tomorrow's Round of 32 matches.
"Philip came away with a gritty win today," Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. "His opponent played well enough to win, but Philip kept fighting and would't give in. I am proud of him, but he needs to, and is capable, to play better. We lost a tough one in doubles, but tomorrow we have another opportunity."
After dropping the first set to Tennessee's Siem Woldeab, Henning pushed back to take the second set and force a third. While Woldeab did not back down, Henning was equally determined and clinched the match (5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-5) to advance to tomorrow's Main Draw Singles Round of 32.
Later, Henning and fellow sophomore Blake Croyder teamed up in a match against Baylor's Ryan Dickerson and Matias Soto. After dropping the first set, 6-0, the Bulldogs gained momentum in the second to force a tiebreaker. Despite taking the lead at times in the final set, Georgia failed to ward off the Bears who took the 6-0, 7-6(3) win.
Tomorrow will feature the singles and doubles Rounds of 32, as well as consolation rounds in singles and doubles.
In main draw singles, Henning is slated to play at 12:30 PST against 16th-seeded Zeke Clark (Illinois). Georgia's sophomore pair will also compete tomorrow in a doubles consolation matchup.
