Hartman and Allen Earn SEC Honors
November 26, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia swimming and diving continued to earn league recognition as freshman Zoie Hartman and junior Zach Allen received Southeastern Conference weekly honors for their performances at the Tennessee Invitational, as announced by the league office in Birmingham Tuesday afternoon.
Hartman was named SEC Women's Freshman of the Week, earning that award for the third time this season and her fourth league honor overall. She was previously named the top freshman on Oct. 8 and Oct. 29, as well as Women's Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 5. Allen was named SEC Men's Diver of the Week, the first league honor of his career. He is the first Bulldog to earn the accolade since Ian Forlini on Feb. 6, 2018.
Hartman continued her outstanding rookie season in Athens with a 51-point performance at the Invite, helping the Lady Bulldogs finish second overall in the event. In the 100 breaststroke, Hartman broke Kristy Kowal's 21-year record with a prelim time of 58.76 before improving upon the mark with a time of 58.27 in the final. Her NCAA automatic-qualifying time was the best of any collegiate swimmer in the event and is currently the nation's top-ranked time.
In addition to her new record, the Danville, Calif. native also entered the Georgia all-time top 10 in two other events. On Thursday, her 200 IM time of 1:53.69 became the second-best time in school history, as well as the No. 3 time nationally, nearly missing out on a second NCAA A-cut. She then closed the meet on Saturday with the third-best 200 breaststroke time in Lady Bulldog history, 2:07.43, topping her then-fourth-ranked prelim mark and giving her the No. 2 national time. Hartman also swam in five relays during the weekend, including the 400 medley relay, where her 100 breaststroke split of 57.84 was the fastest in school history.
At the diving well, Allen led the Bulldogs in their upset victory over No. 4 Indiana and No. 8 Tennessee, posting a team-best 57 points in record-breaking outings. In the 3-meter springboard, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native set a new personal record with a score of 371.85 in victory, earning the top score in three of six rounds.
Later, in the 1-meter springboard, he set another PR with his winning score of 354.80, taking first in five rounds. He also placed first in the 1-meter prelims with a score of 328.65. In the closing platform event, Allen finished as the runner-up, scoring a mark of 247.50. Three of Allen's springboard scores eclipsed the NCAA auto-qualifying standard, giving him five such marks for the season. Dating back to his performance at Florida, he has placed first in his last four springboard finals.
With Tuesday's plaudits, Georgia has now earned a SEC individual honor in each of its four eligible weeks.
