Georgia Beats Mercer, 76-60
November 21, 2019 | Women's Basketball
ATHENS, Ga. -- A dominant second-half performance lifted the Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball team over Mercer, 76-60, Thursday evening at Stegeman Coliseum.
Junior Gabby Connally led Georgia (3-1) in scoring, tallying 14 points. Three other Lady Bulldogs scored in double digits, as sophomore Caitlin Hose and juniors Que Morrison and Maya Caldwell recorded 10 each.
"We knew we had a size advantage," said Georgia head coach Joni Taylor. "So, our goal was to get the ball inside, score in the paint, try to win the rebounding war and then attack on offense. I thought we did that well. We still have to get better at taking care of the basketball."
Mercer jumped out to a 13-4 lead early in the first quarter, forcing the Lady Bulldogs to call a timeout.
Georgia then kept Mercer scoreless from the field for the last four minutes in the period, allowing just one free throw and concluding the frame down 16-14.
Freshman Javyn Nicholson registered Georgia's first points of the second quarter with two layups, tying the game for the first time since the first three minutes of play. A jumper from Caldwell shortly after gave the Lady Bulldogs a 20-18 lead. Two more baskets from Connally within the last minute of the second quarter gave Georgia a 30-25 advantage at the half.
Out of the locker room, Connally extended the Lady Bulldogs' lead to seven with a three after exchanging free throws early in the second half. Caldwell gave Georgia its first double-digit lead of the night, draining a three on a fast break to go up 46-36.
Four different Lady Bulldogs scored within the final three minutes of the third period.
In the fourth quarter, the Bears brought the score within single digits before Connally nailed her third 3-pointer of the game. The Lady Bulldogs finished the contest on a 10-0 run, conceding two free throws with less than a minute remaining to defeat Mercer, 76-60.
Up next, Georgia will continue its eight-game home stretch as it hosts Villanova on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 6 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum.
