Bulldogs Featured In ITA Final Fall Rankings

ATHENS-----Six Bulldogs earned spots in the singles top 100 of the 2019 Oracle ITA Final Fall Rankings, recently released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The ITA issued a new top 125 in singles and top 60 in doubles based on the fall tournament results.Â
Overall, Georgia went 74-37 in singles and 28-13 in doubles this fall. Georgia junior Katarina Jokic, who was preseason ranked No. 1 as the returning National Player of the Year, only played a couple of collegiate events, going 5-1 while enjoying some success in a couple of professional tournaments. She checks in at No. 17 in the ITA after the fall. Pepperdine senior Ashley Lahey garnered the top spot after winning three tournaments and finishing with a 16-0 mark.

Bulldog freshman Lea Ma earned a No. 19 ranking after going 14-5 in her first semester of collegiate action. Junior Vivian Wolff played the most tennis, tallying a 15-8 record. She is ranked No. 38. Senior Marta Gonzalez is No. 46 after registering an 11-5 record. Sophomore Meg Kowalski was limited to a few tournaments while recovering from an injury and finished 6-4 and ranked No. 56. Junior Morgan Coppoc posted the best mark among the Bulldogs at 14-3. She won the consolation singles title over Kowalski at the ITA Southeast Regionals and now is ranked No. 83.Â

During the fall season, teams employ various doubles teams to figure out the strongest tandems. Georgia's most successful duo was Wolff and senior Elena Christofi. They went 12-4 and captured the consolation title at the Oracle National Fall Championships last weekend in California. The Wolff/Christofi team is now ranked No. 7. The Gonzalez/Coppoc team is No. 60 after going 2-0.

The collegiate season resumes in January with the ITA Kick-off Weekend (Jan. 24-27) at campus sites. Host sites were selected based on the final 2019 Oracle/ITA Rankings, and Georgia ended the year No. 2 after going 28-2.
The Bulldogs will play host to a kick-off event featuring  Notre Dame, Furman and Michigan State. Georgia will be the top seed here and will open against No. 4 seed Michigan State on Saturday, Jan. 25 while No. 2 seed Notre Dame plays No. 3 seed Furman. On Sunday, the 26th, the losing teams play a match followed by the winners. The winner of the ITA Kick-Off event advances to the National Team Indoors, Feb. 5-10 in Chicago. Georgia is the defending National Team Indoor champion, notching its fourth indoor title in the history of the program last year in Seattle.
