NASSAU, Bahamas — Georgia fired a 3-over 291 in Tuesday's second round of the White Sands Invitational, pushing the Bulldogs up two spots on the team leaderboard into third. Georgia enters the final round at 4-over 580 at the Ocean Club Golf Course.
"We're headed in the right direction," head coach Josh Brewer said. "It was probably a better round than we played yesterday. It was windy from the first hole on today where it has been more calm the first couple of days. We still came close to shooting under par today, and we'll try to get there tomorrow."
Freshman Caterina Don is in third place individually. She shot 2-under 70 in on Tuesday and is 5-under through 36 holes. The Bulldogs also counted sophomore Jo Hua Hung's 73 and a pair of 74s from sophomore Jenny Bae and freshman Céleste Dao, while dropping Alison Crenshaw's 81. Freshman Caroline Craig, who is competing as an individual, fired a 73.
Overall, Hung is tied for 16th at 1-over 145, Craig is tied for 28th at 147, Bae and Dao are both tied for 34th at 148 and Crenshaw is 81st at 160.
Don's sixth par-or-better loop in 10 rounds this fall featured four birdies and two bogeys. She began the day at No. 5 and bogeyed No. 7 and birdied No. 9 before the "turn." On the back nine, Don birdied No. 14 and bogeyed No. 17 to return to the front side at even. She promptly birdied No. 1 and No. 2 before closing with a pair of pars.
No. 3 Texas continues to lead the team and individual fields. The Longhorns are 22-under, 18 strokes ahead of No. 17 Arkansas in second. Sophie Guo and Sara Kouskova from Texas are 1-2 individually at 11- and 7-under, respectively.
Trailing the Longhorns and Razorbacks in the team competition are the Bulldogs and Oklahoma at 580, No. 24 Houston at 582, North Texas at 583, Clemson at 584, No. 21 Mississippi State and Baylor both at 587, Tennessee at 588, SMU at 593, Tulane at 594, No. 25 Ohio State at 595 and New Mexico at 600.
There are five top-25 teams in field and three more ranked ahead of the Bulldogs, who are currently tabbed No. 34 by Golfstat.
"You take away the day and a half at Minnesota to start the season and I think we'd be ranked around the top 10," Brewer said. "You have to live with that because that's how rankings work. We know we can play with and beat everyone in the country. We just have to go out and prove it. We have a chance to do that tomorrow, and we look forward to the challenge."
Georgia will be paired with Houston and North Texas for Wednesday's final round, teeing of with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. ET on holes No. 5, No. 6, No. 7 and No. 17. Live scoring will be updated every three holes at www.golfstat.com.
