NASSAU, Bahamas — The Georgia women's golf team posted a 1-over 289 in Monday's open round of the inaugural White Sands Invitational at the Ocean Club Golf Course, putting the Bulldogs in fifth place on the team leaderboard.
"We got off to a really solid start today," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We played really well all day. We would've liked to have finished under par, but today was a very positive step. A round like today should give us plenty of momentum and confidence heading into the next few days."
Freshman Caterina Don led Georgia with a 3-under 69 and is tied for fourth in the individual field. Sophomore Jo Hua Hung shot even-par 72 and is tied for 21st. The Bulldogs also counted a pair of 2-over 74s from sophomore Jenny Bae and freshman Céleste Dao, who are tied for 35th. Freshman Caroline Craig, who is competing individually, also shot 72, while junior Alison Crenshaw signed for a 79 and is tied for 76th.
Don began her day on No. 7 with a bogey and was never in red numbers until late in the day. She birdied No. 10 to get the lost stroke back and then went bogey-birdie at No. 14 and No. 15 to be even halfway through her round. After six consecutive pars, Don capper her loop with a trio of birdies at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to notch her fifth par-or-better effort in nine rounds this fall.
"To finish birdie-birdie-birdie should give Caterina some momentum heading into tomorrow," Brewer said. "She's a special player, and we're happy to have her as part of our program. We have great depth on this team, and other players have beaten her in qualifying. That should give them confidence that they can compete with anyone in the nation."
Hung's day featured two birdies, to bogeys and 14 pars. She opened at No. 9 and was 2-under through seven holes after birdies at No. 13 and No. 15. Hung dropped back to even after bogeys at no. 5 and No. 7 before finishing with a par.
No. 3 Texas grabbed the first-round lead following a 12-under 276, seven shots better than No. 17 Arkansas in second at 283. Rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 24 Houston at 287, Clemson at 288, the Bulldogs at 289, Baylor at 291, No. 25 Ohio State at 293, No. 21 Mississippi State at 294 and Oklahoma and North Texas both at 295.
Sophie Guo of Texas fired a 6-under 66 to gain the individual lead. She is two strokes better than Gracyn Burgess of Clemson and Karen Fredgaard of Houston.
Play will continue through Wednesday. The Bulldogs will be paired with Clemson and Baylor on Tuesday. Live scoring is being updated on a three-hole basis at www.golfstat.com.
