Coppoc Claims Consolation Title

October 21, 2019 | Women's Tennis

TALLAHASSEE, FLA.---Georgia junior Morgan Coppoc claimed the consolation singles title at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships here Monday.

Coppoc was one of five Bulldogs to play for a title on the final day of action on the campus of Florida State. Coppoc edged teammate Meg Kowalski 6-3,7-5. After dropping their opening round match in the main draw Thursday, Coppoc and Kowalski reeled off four wins apiece to meet in the consolation final. Coppoc now has a team-best 14-3 record this fall.

In the doubles final, the 31st-ranked team of Marie Mattel and Rebeka Stolmar (Central Florida) held off Georgia's No. 19 ranked tandem of Elena Christofi and Vivian Wolf 8-5. These two teams were the top two seeds in the tournament. The UCF pair improved to 12-1 this fall.

In the singles main draw, Georgia freshman Lea Ma enjoyed a run to the final, collecting five victories over the weekend before falling to the second seed, McCartney Kessler (Florida), who was a finalist at this event in 2018. Kessler, ranked No. 23 nationally, registered a 6-2,6-2 win over Ma, winning all six of her matches in the tournament in straight sets. Ma is now 12-3 in her Bulldog career. As a regional singles finalist, she has earned a spot in the main draw of the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, Calif.

The Oracle ITA Nationals features 64 of the nation's top collegiate singles players and 32 of the top doubles teams. In its third year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, it is the lone event on the collegiate tennis calendar to feature competitors from all five divisions playing in the same tournament. Georgia's Katarina Jokic won the 2018 ITA National Fall Championship, which marked the 11th individual national championship in Georgia women's tennis history.
