Bulldogs Head To ITA Regional

October 16, 2019 | Women's Tennis

ATHENS---Seven members of the Georgia women's tennis team will head to Tallahassee Thursday for the the penultimate tournament of the fall – the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.

Qualifying begins Thursday on the Florida State campus as eight spots in the singles main draw are available along with three in doubles. Bulldog sophomore Alee Clayton played in qualifying and won two matches to advance to the main draw while the remaining six Georgia entries were already in the main draw that starts Friday and runs through Monday.

"We play in one of the best regions in the country, so this is always a great tournament," said Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace. "Some of our players have played a good bit of tennis this fall, and this is a great opportunity to pick up a few more wins while working on their game. We have a few players who are coming back from injuries, and they can use this opportunity to get on the court and continue to make improvements in their game."

The Bulldogs have enjoyed a recent run of success at the ITA regional event. A Bulldog won the singles title in 2015 (Caroline Brinson), 2016 (Elena Christofi) and 2017 (Katrina Jokic). Last year, Marta Gonzalez reached the semifinals in singles and in doubles with Morgan Coppoc.

Georgia's top singles performers this fall have been Gonzalez with a 9-4 record, Coppoc at 9-2 and junior Vivian Wolff at 8-5. Meanwhile, top-ranked Katarina Jokic (5-1) will not be competing at the regionals as she has already earned a spot in the national tournament based on her current national ranking.

Georgia has posted a combined 46-24 record in fall singles and 17-9 in doubles. The fall is when most squads employ different doubles combinations in preparation for the team dual match season that commences indoors in late January. For example, the Bulldogs have used 10 different duos to date.

The ITA regional winner earns a spot in the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, Nov. 6-10 at the Newport Beach Tennis Club and the Tennis Club at Newport Beach Country Club. This event features 128 of the nation's top collegiate singles players (64 women and 64 men) and 64 doubles teams (32 women's teams and 32 men's teams). In its third year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, it is the lone event on the collegiate tennis calendar to feature competitors from all five divisions playing in the same tournament. Jokic won the 2018 ITA National Fall Championship, which marked the 11th individual national championship in Georgia women's tennis history.

In this year's ITA Southeast Regional qualifying, Clayton posted a 5-7,6-2,6-4 win over Aylen Hubeaut (FAMU) and then beat Angela Plagaro (Stetson) 7-6(6),6-3. Georgia's doubles entries will be Christofi/Wolff, and they are the top seed, while the fifth seed will be Coppoc/Lea Ma and the sixth seed will be Gonzalez/Meg Kowalski.
