STANFORD, Calif. — The Georgia women's golf team posted a 10-over 294 in Friday's opening round of the Stanford Intercollegiate, placing the Bulldogs 12th in a field which features seven of the nation's top-15 teams.
Sophomore Jenny Bae led Georgia with an even-par 71. The Bulldogs' remaining counting rounds were a 73 from freshman Céleste Dao, a 74 from freshman Caterina Don and a 76 from sophomore Jo Hua Hung. Freshman Caroline Craig's 77 was Georgia's drop score, while senior Kelsey Kurnett, who is competing as an individual, shot 78.
"Jenny gave us a much-needed round today," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We've had some good individual rounds from a lot of people this fall. We're going to put it all together at some point this fall. We'll come out and try to do that tomorrow and shoot the score we know we're capable of posting. This is an elite field. It's almost an NCAA Championship caliber field so we'll learn a lot about ourselves and where we want to be."
Overall, Bae is tied for 18th on the individual leaderboard, followed by Dao in 32nd, Don in 45th, Hung in 65th, Craig in 74th and Kurnett in 79th.
"All five people had a chance to shoot near par but weren't quite able to finish," Brewer said. "We just didn't get that round where someone was 1- or 2-under."
Georgia teed off from No. 10 and played the back side first on Friday. Bae bogeyed No. 12 bounced back to make her first birdie of the day at No. 15. She turned at 2-over after a double-bogey at No. 18 but regained those strokes with birdies at No. 4 and No. 7 as she covered the front nine at 2-under.
"Jenny shooting even par was a very good sign," Brewer said. "Her 'M.O.' has always sort of been to hit a lot of fairways and hit a lot of greens and take advantage of that to make a couple of birdies. That's exactly what she did today. It was nice to have her back in our lineup. She's one of our better players and her performance today pushes everyone."
No. 5 Arizona State shot 6-under 278 to grab the team lead by two shots over No. 1 Stanford. No. 3 Southern Cal and No. 15 Oregon are tied for third at 282, followed by No. 10 Arizona at 285; UCLA at 290; Washington State at 291; Iowa State at 292; Northwestern, Pepperdine and San Jose State all at 293; the Bulldogs at 294; No. 15 Oregon State and Cal at 295; No. 7 Florida at 296; San Diego State at 300; and UC Davis at 308.
Stanford's Angelina Ye is the individual leader. She shot 4-under 67 on Friday, one stroke better than six golfers tied for second.
Georgia will be paired with UCLA and individual competitors on Saturday, teeing off between 3:00-3:44 p.m. ET. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
