Sophomore Bulldogs Advance to Semifinals of ITA All-America Doubles Consolation Championship

TULSA, Okla. —  Georgia men's tennis sophomores Blake Croyder and Philip Henning moved on to the semifinals of the 2019 ITA All-America doubles consolation championship Friday afternoon in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

"Blake and Phil played another high-level match," associate head coach Jamie Hunt said. "Blake served extremely well. They're a tough team to beat right now."

In Friday's quarterfinals, Georgia's team of Henning and Croyder raced through the first set to take it, 6-2. The No. 26-ranked Arizona State pair of Andrea Bolla and Tim Ruehl responded with a 7-5 win in the second, forcing the match to a third set. Here, the sophomore Bulldogs fought back, taking six-straight games to eventually win the match, 6-2, 5-7, 10-3, to advance to tomorrow's semifinals.

Sophomore Henning, ranked No. 81 in ITA rankings, had an impressive showing in the week's singles rounds. Earlier in the week, the South Africa native defeated the No. 35-ranked Daniel Rodrigues before ousting No. 7 seed John McNally, ranked No. 11 in ITA rankings. However, Henning fell in the Round of 16 to No. 45 Aggie Val Vacherot, 6-4, 6-4. In total, the sophomore Bulldog competed in 20 sets in five days to round out the ITA All-America singles championship.

Saturday will feature the singles and doubles semifinal rounds, with finals for both set to take place Sunday, Oct. 13.

Georgia also begins competition at the GT Fall Invite, beginning tomorrow at 8 a.m. with two rounds of doubles and the first round of singles. Sunday will feature the singles quarterfinals and semifinals rounds. Play concludes on Monday with the singles and doubles finals.
