GymDogs Score Season-Highs to Defeat Iowa State, 197.000-195.900
January 21, 2019 | Gymnastics
ATHENS, Ga. — Season-high performances by the sixth-ranked University of Georgia gymnastics team propelled the GymDogs to a 197.000-195.900 victory over Iowa State Monday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum.
Georgia is only the fifth school to record a 197.000 so far this season. The GymDogs' 49.175 score on the beam ousted the squad's previous season-high of 49.125, a score the Georgia gymnastics team finished with in its last meet against a then-No.17 Alabama squad.
All-arounder Rachel Dickson recorded season-highs on bars (9.900) and beam (9.875). In the all-around, Dickson also set a season-best score of 39.475. Junior Sabrina Vega grabbed season-best scores, as well, performing to a 9.925 score on the floor and a 9.850 for her vault.
"It really is what we expect," Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said about earning a 197.000. "Our slogan is 'Whatever It Takes', but I keep telling the team, 'You have what it takes. You don't need 'whatever' anymore.' That was in the fall during training season. Now, with the tough training, every girl on this squad has what it takes. I think they're all beginning to realize that, and they're really starting to perform with confidence, which is the biggest thing. Of course, there needs to be improvement in some areas, and we're still figuring out lineups. Overall as a team, though, I really do believe that mentality of, 'We've got what it takes," is starting to form."
Starting out on vault, the GymDogs' performance resulted in a 49.300, to match a season-best previously set at Oklahoma. Leading the squad with a 9.925 was lone senior Sydney Snead, and freshman Rachel Lukacs followed closely behind with a score of 9.900. Vega scored a 9.850, while Dickson added a 9.825. Freshman Abbey Ward contributed a 9.800. Iowa State finished with 48.900 on the vault.
Sophomore Marissa Oakley swung to a 9.925 for the Georgia squad's highest score on bars, while Dickson's bar performance resulted in a 9.900. Freshman and Iowa native Alexa Al-Hameed scored a 9.875, and Snead finished with a 9.850. Freshman Megan Roberts and sophomore Emily Schild rounded out the GymDogs' lineup on bars. Roberts contributed 9.650. The Cyclones scored 48.950.
Next on beam, two Georgia gymnasts scored 9.875, with Dickson scoring the first 9.875 and Vega anchoring Georgia's lineup on the beam with another 9.875. Snead added a 9.850, while Schild finished with a 9.800. Baumann contributed her 9.775 score.
Wrapping up the meet with the floor routine, GymDogs Lukacs and Vega led Georgia with scores of 9.925. Snead, who also won the all-around with 39.525, scored 9.900 on the floor. Dickson added 9.875, and freshman Mikayla Magee finished with 9.700.
Next up, the Georgia gymnastics squad will travel to Auburn, Alabama, to take on the Tigers on Friday, January 25 live on the SEC Network.
