Bulldogs Drop Five-Set Decision to Oklahoma

September 08, 2018 | Volleyball

BOULDER, Colo. – The Georgia volleyball team (7-1) dropped its first match of the 2018 season to Oklahoma (5-3) Saturday in Boulder.

T'ara Ceasar earned her second-straight, fourth of the season, 20-kill match with 21 kills. With 13 digs, she also recorded her third double-double. Majesti Bass finished with a season-high 16 kills while Rachel Ritchie finished with 10, keeping her double-digit kill streak alive at eight matches.

Setter Meghan Donovan had 50 kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. In all, four Bulldogs finished with double-digit dig matches including Kendall Glover (14) and Claire Rothenberger (12). Anna Kate Karstens tied a season-high seven blocks.

The match featured 31 total ties and 11 total lead changes, both a season high for Georgia.

The Bulldogs led much of the opening set, leading by as much as four, but the charging Sooners worked to tie the set at 17. Georgia and OU exchanged points. Tied at 22, the Sooners worked three-straight points to take the opening set, 25-22.

Georgia opened the second set with four-straight points. Oklahoma took a brief lead early but Georgia recovered and never looked back. A 4-1 run prompted a timeout from OU with Georgia up 15-11. Coming out of the timeout, the Bulldogs took three of the next four points, forcing Oklahoma to use its final timeout. The Bulldogs cruised to the 25-17 set two win to tie the match up.

At the end of the second set, Ceasar and Bass each led the team with six kills each. Five of Bass' kills came in the second set to lead the Bulldogs.

The third set was the closest frame of the match with 10 ties and three lead changes. Neither team gained much of a lead the first half of the set. Oklahoma pulled ahead by two as Georgia took a timeout. The Sooners were able to hold off the Bulldogs the remainder of the set to recapture a lead in the match, 25-23.

Georgia captured an early lead that it never let go of in the fourth set, cruising to a 25-18 win in the set, forcing a fifth and final set. Ceasar and Bass once again picked up six kills each. As a team, Georgia's best hitting set was in the fourth with a .286 clip.

The Bulldogs led at the end change, 8-7; however, Oklahoma scored the next three points to take the lead, 10-8. A kill by Ceasar made it a one-point set, then Mallory Hernandez tied it up at 13. Oklahoma's Sarah Sanders and Morgan Miller recorded back-to-back kills to secure the win over the Bulldogs, 15-13.

Georgia will retake the court Sunday at 1 p.m., ET, against North Carolina in Boulder.
