Season Preview: A Closer Look at the Bulldogs

It's no coincidence the last thing the Georgia men's tennis team will see while leaving its new locker room and stepping foot on the courts will be the slogan, "Team Comes First."

That's this year's motto for head coach Manuel Diaz and his squad following the 2017-18 campaign. After winning five-straight SEC titles and 28 conference championships in 30 years under Coach Diaz, the Bulldogs finished with a 13-11 record a year ago and are looking to bounce back this season.

There is reason to be hopeful – after all, Georgia returns a nucleus of players to go along with a signing class that ranked among the best nationally.

Seniors Walker Duncan, Jan Zielinski and Emil Reinberg are hoping to make the most of their fourth years in Athens. They look to fill the team's leadership roles after the departure of last year's senior captain Wayne Montgomery.

Zielinski heads into this weekend's tournament with two-straight Southern Intercollegiate doubles titles. He is also two doubles wins away from breaking into the top-20 on the Bulldogs' career doubles wins list.

Robert Loeb had a successful freshman season in 2016-17, during which he and partner Zielinski were doubles finalists in the NCAA Championship, but Loeb was sometimes limited as a sophomore last season due to injury. The 2017 ITA All-American looks to bounce back and fill a pivotal role for the Bulldogs.

Coach Diaz is also looking forward to the impact this year's freshman class, which is ranked as the No. 2 signing class in the country for 2018 per tennisrecruiting.net.

Georgia's freshman class includes Georgia natives and five-star prospects Trent Bryde, Blake Croyder and Britton Johnston. Bryde, a native of Suwannee, Ga., signed with the Bulldogs as the fourth-best prospect in the nation and plans to join the team this January. Croyder and Johnston began preparations with the Bulldogs this past summer and will play in the fall.

Croyder, a native of Marietta, Ga., is ranked 10th nationally and fifth in the southeast according to tennisrecruiting.net. He joins the Bulldogs as a two-time clay court national doubles champion and quarterfinalist at the national championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., for both singles and doubles back in 2016. Johnston, who comes to Athens by way of Snellville, Ga., is ranked No. 4 in the state of Georgia and 14th in the southeast.

The mix of veteran players and impressive group of newcomers will face a challenging slate this spring and are hoping the fall season will help prepare them for what's ahead.

In addition to the always tough SEC, Georgia will play defending national runner-up Ohio State, which finished with a 34-3 record in 2017-18, and will battle Texas in Athens on March 3. The Longhorns finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 19-7 record and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.

Georgia's route to the 2019 NCAA Championships begins this weekend at one of the most storied fall tournaments in collegiate tennis – the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens.
