Strong Showing At Big 5 Challenge

FT. WORTH, TEXAS-----Four Bulldogs picked up their second singles win in as many days during the Big 5 Challenge Friday on the campus of Texas Christian University.
Georgia junior Marta Gonzalez and the freshmen contingent of Lourdes Carle, Alee Clayton and Meg Kowalski registered straight set wins to all improve to 2-0 here. Gonzalez now has a pair of wins over ranked opponents while Carle picked up a solid victory over No. 46 ranked Lauryn John Baptiste (Arizona State).
"We had another productive day on the courts, and we're pleased to get in singles and doubles matches Friday," said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. "Marta is playing well, and our freshmen are gaining experience including Lourdes earning her first win over a ranked opponent."
Georgia sophomore Vivian Wolff fell in three sets to Cali Jankowski (Arizona State) while Tereza Kolarova (Arizona State) defeated Bulldog sophomore Annette Goulak. In doubles, the Goulak/Wolff tandem notched a 6-3 doubles victory over Kolarova/Alicea (ASU). The Carle/Clayton duo nearly pulled an upset over the 50th-ranked pair of Slaysman/Jankowski (ASU) but were edged in a tiebreaker 7-6(4).
Players from 13 different schools are in the field this week and six singles champions and three doubles tandems will be crowned on Sunday. Results will be posted on georgiadogs.com as soon as they are made available.
