Bulldogs Flourishing At Big 5 Challenge
FT. WORTH, TEXAS-----Five Bulldogs earned singles wins, while four of them kept their records unscathed at 3-0 at the Big 5 Challenge Saturday on the campus of Texas Christian University.
All five singles wins came in straight sets. Georgia junior Marta Gonzalez and the freshmen trio of Lourdes Carle, Alee Clayton and Meg Kowalski all improved to 3-0 to start the season. Joining in the win column was Vivian Wolff as the sophomore moved to 2-1 for the weekend. The wins secured the passage of the same four Bulldogs to play for four of the six singles championship matches that will play out Sunday.
Gonzalez, ranked No. 76 in ITA singles, bested All Big-12 senior and No. 37-ranked Felicity Maltby of Texas Tech 6-0, 6-2. Also defeating senior Red Raiders were Kowalski and Wolff as they beat Francesca Sella and Lana Rush, respectively. Carle, ranked fourth in the ITA Newcomer list, won a battle of freshman, beating Nell Miller of TTU. Clayton was in a freshman match as well and came out on top 6-2, 7-5 to TTU's Isa Di Laura.
The sole loss came from sophomore Annette Goulak who fell in a high-scoring second-set tiebreaker.
Players from 13 different schools are in the field this week and six singles champions and three doubles tandems will be crowned on Sunday. Results will be posted on georgiadogs.com as soon as they are made available.
