Solid Debut At Big 5 Challenge
September 21, 2018 | Women's Tennis
FT. WORTH, TEXAS— Junior Marta Gonzalez was one of five Bulldogs to win their first round match at the Big 5 Challenge here on the campus of Texas Christian University.
Gonzalez posted a straight set win over junior Meghan Kelley (Virginia) in her first action of the fall tournament season.
"It was a great first day, and we were ready to compete against some other players after practicing against each other," said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. "Marta came out playing great and that was nice to see. Vivian (Wolff) has stepped up her game and looks ready to have a big season for us."
Along with Gonzalez, sophomore Vivian Wolff and the freshmen trio of Lourdes Carle, Alee Clayton and Meg Kowalski notched a straight set win Thursday. It was the collegiate debut for the freshmen. Meanwhile, sophomore Annette Goulak was the lone Bulldog to come up short in the first round, falling to junior Camille Favero (Virginia).
Players from 13 different schools are in the field this week and six singles champions and three doubles tandems will be crowned on Sunday. Due to weather, Thursday's action featured mostly singles action. The Bulldogs in the field are slated to play their first doubles matches on Friday. Results will be posted on georgiadogs.com as soon as they are made available.
