Bulldogs Come In Second In The Carmel Cup

September 02, 2018 | Men's Golf

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. --- The Georgia men's golf team had the field's lowest round of the day and wound up in second place on Sunday in The Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

On the par-72 layout covering 6,828 yards, the Bulldogs fired a 15-under 345 in the final round to land at 44-under 1,036. Trailing by 15 strokes at the start of Sunday's competition, Georgia wound up just two shy of Oklahoma (46-under 1,034). In The Carmel Cup format, five of six players count toward the team total, rather than the more traditional four of five.

Junior Trevor Phillips paced the Bulldogs in the final round as he carded a 5-under 67. Junior Spencer Ralston, sophomore Davis Thompson and freshman Trent Phillips each added a 3-under 69, while redshirt junior Tye Waller signed for a 1-under 71. Sophomore John Hilliard Catanzaro had Georgia's non-counting score of 3-over 75.

Making his collegiate debut in The Carmel Cup, Trent Phillips finished third individually at 15-under 201, two shots behind Oklahoma State's Matthew Wolff (17-under 199). Phillips' 15-under tournament matched the third-lowest total in school history, and his second-round 8-under 64 tied the second-best loop in Georgia annals.

Thompson placed 11th at 7-under 209, while Ralston finished 13th at 6-under 210 and Waller came in 19th at 4-under 212. Catanzaro wound up at 3-under 213, followed by Trevor Phillips at 2-under 214.

"I loved the way we battled all weekend," Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. "Facing a 12-shot hole after the first round and a 15-shot deficit heading into today, it would have been easy for any team to pack it in. Our guys never looked at it that way. We played good golf all three days and put ourselves in position to make some noise. We felt coming into the season that we had a much-improved team, and I think this shows that we are definitely on the right track. We're already looking forward to the next one."

The Bulldogs will return to action Sept. 30-Oct. 2 in the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational Tournament at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
