Back On The Road Again Versus The SEC

Georgia will face its toughest test of the season when it travels to face a red-hot Missouri (3-0), who has won nine straight regular season games and averaged 40 or more points in all of those victories. This matchup features two of the 10 FBS head coaches who coach at their alma mater with Kirby Smart leading the Bulldogs and Barry Odom guiding the Tigers.

Both teams are among the top scoring offenses in the SEC while Georgia ranks first in Scoring Defense allowing just 8.0 points/game. The Tigers are second in the league in Total Offense (589.0 yards/game) and lead the league in Passing Offense (389.0). Senior QB Drew Lock leads the SEC in Total Offense and Passing and ranks sixth in SEC history with 82 touchdown passes. Senior Emanuel Hall leads the SEC, averaging 143.3 yards/ game. Hall had four catches for 88 yards against Purdue while true freshman Jalen Knox hauled in five catches for 110 yards and a score.

Georgia's signal caller, sophomore Jake Fromm, leads the nation in Completion Percentage (80 percent). The Bulldogs are also ranked No. 1 nationally in Completion Percentage at 81 percent as freshman Justin Fields is 14-of-18 on the year. Junior Mecole Hardman topps the Bulldogs with 12 catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns. In the victory over Middle Tennessee State, four receivers caught touchdown passes, including the first career scores for sophomore Jeremiah Holloman and senior Jayson Stanley.

Missouri joined the SEC in 2012 after leaving the Big 12 Conference. Located in Columbia, Mo., the Tigers are preparing for their 2018 SEC opener. Missouri topped UT Martin 51-14 and then Wyoming 40-13 at Faurot Field before traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., where the Tigers edged the Boilermakers 40-37 this past Saturday night.

2017 Series Flashback: #4 Georgia 53, Missouri 28

The teams traded touchdowns often in the first half with the Bulldogs posting a 34-21 halftime advantage. Missouri's Drew Lock connected with Emanuel Hall on a pair of 63-yard touchdown strikes. The Bulldog defense blanked the Tigers in the third quarter, holding them to just two first downs in three possessions. Overall, Georgia tallied 696 yards of total offense, the second most in program history, to register a 53-28 win in Sanford Stadium. Jake Fromm was 18-for-26 for 326 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT while Lock finished 15-for-25 for 253 yards, 4 TDs and 1 INT. Georgia improved to 7-0 (4-0 SEC).

Last Trip To Columbia, Mo. (2016): #16 Georgia 28, Missouri 27

In Kirby Smart's SEC debut, Georgia edged the Tigers with a late touchdown on 4th down and 10, and the defense preserved the victory by creating its fifth turnover of the game to end the drama at Faurot Field. Jacob Eason led Georgia 90 yards on 10 plays for the winning score, capped by a 20-yard TD pass to Isaiah McKenzie with 1:31 to play. Natrez Patrick collected nine tackles for the Bulldogs and Juwuan Briscoe recovered a fumble at midfield following a 20-yard completion from Drew Lock to J'Mon Moore. Lock finished 23-for-38 for 376 yards, 3 TDs and 3 INTs. Eason was 29-of-55 for 308 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT. Georgia improved to 3-0 (1-0 SEC).

Tailback By Committee

While Georgia counted on a record-setting tandem in the backfield over the last couple of years, the Bulldogs are calling on a variety of tailbacks to lead the attack in 2018, including sophomore D'Andre Swift, juniors Elijah Holyfield and Brian Herrien and freshman James Cook. Swift started the first three games and has the most carries with 24 for 119 yards and two touchdowns. In the most recent win over MTSU, Holyfield went for his first career 100-yard rushing performance (8 for 100) and scored his second touchdown of the year. Cook now stands third on the team with 22 carries for 105 yards. Missouri leads the SEC in Rushing Defense, allowing just 74.7 yards/game.

Georgia is replacing tailbacks Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. They completed their Bulldog career in 2017 as the top pair in college football history, amassing 8,407 rushing yards and 77 rushing touchdowns.

When Georgia looked for a new head coach after the 2015 season, the arrows pointed to Kirby Smart, longtime Alabama defensive coordinator and former UGA player and assistant. The 2017 Associated Press SEC Coach of the Year has not disappointed.

In his first year leading the Bulldogs in 2016, Georgia extended its school record to 20 consecutive bowl appearances and posted five fourth-quarter comebacks including wins over No. 8 Auburn and No. 22 North Carolina. He led UGA to an 8-5 final record, which included a victory over TCU in the Liberty Bowl.

In 2017, Smart directed UGA to a 13-2 record, an SEC title, a win at The Rose Bowl Game during the CFP semifinal and a spot in the National Championship. He was named the Maxwell Football Club's George Munger National Coach of the Year. Before 2017, the Bulldogs last SEC title was 2005.

He has also made an immediate impact in recruiting, posting the nation's top-ranked class in 2018 and the third-ranked class in 2017. In addition to coaching, Smart oversees the Kirby Smart Family Foundation, which is focused on being champions in the community by supporting and giving back to needy children and families.

Smart officially came home to Georgia on Dec. 6, 2015. But he still had unfinished business at Alabama, which was chasing a national title. He juggled two jobs for a month until January 11, 2016, when the Tide won its fourth national championship in a seven-year span. Twelve hours later, he was at work in Athens.

Offense Putting Up Big Numbers

For the first time since 2012, the Bulldogs have started with three 40-plus point performances, highlighted by their 41-17 win at #24 South Carolina.

Georgia averaged 35.4 points/game in 2017. Currently, the Bulldogs are averaging 45.0 points/game.

The 2017 Bulldogs ranked fourth nationally in Red Zone Offense, going 53-for-55, including 39 touchdowns, last year. This season, Georgia is 13-for-14 with 12 touchdowns and a field goal and ran out the clock to end the rout of the Gamecocks.

QB Jake Fromm is 15-2 as a starter, including 5-2 versus Top 25 teams. He currently leads the nation in Completion Percentage at 80 percent (37-of-46 for 479 yards, six touchdowns, one interception).

Georgia also has true freshman QB Justin Fields, who was one of the nation's top recruits. After enrolling in January, he has seen action in each of the first three games and is 14-for-17 for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Fields is averaging 9.6 yards/carry with 67 yards on seven carries.

In his career, Fromm has led his team to two comebacks when trailing at the half. One of Georgia's signature wins came with his 2018 Rose Bowl Game performance after the Bulldogs trailed 31-17 at the half and rallied to a 54-48 win in double overtime. Georgia trailed 45-38 with 3:22 remaining in the game before Fromm directed a game-tying drive.

Fromm's first career start came last year at #24 Notre Dame. Trailing 19-17 with 6:47 left in the contest, Fromm directed a nine play, 63-yard drive to set up the go-ahead field goal. He was 3-for-4 for 45 yards during the drive.

A Look At The Line

The Bulldogs return four of five starters on the offensive line, including Freshman All-American tackle Andrew Thomas. Thomas went down with a left ankle injury against #24 South Carolina, and freshman Cade Mays filled in. Mays then started at LT versus Middle Tennessee State as Thomas continued his recovery.

Through the first three games, Georgia's starting line has featured Thomas/Mays (LT), redshirt sophomore Solomon Kindley (LG), senior Lamont Gaillard (C), redshirt sophomore Ben Cleveland (RG) and redshirt freshman Isaiah Wilson (RT).

The OL helped pave the way for 473 yards against #24 South Carolina, including 271 on the ground. Then against the Blue Raiders, the Bulldogs piled up 484 yards with 261 coming on the ground.

Spreading The Wealth

Georgia's quarterbacks have done a good job of spreading the ball around to an array of receivers. Junior Mecole Hardman leads the group with 12 catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns.

Hardman had a career day at #24 South Carolina, hauling in six catches for 103 yards, including a 34-yard touchdown. This was Georgia's first 100-yard receiver since the 2016 Liberty Bowl versus TCU (Isaiah McKenzie, 4-103). Hardman had four receptions for 21 yards, including a touchdown, to started the Bulldogs' scoring against MTSU. Later, he added a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown versus the Blue Raiders.

With senior WR Terry Godwin resting a lower leg injury versus APSU, 11 different Bulldogs caught a pass in the win. Collectively, they finished with 21 catches for 224 yards and three touchdowns.

There has been a spirited competition to join Godwin and Hardman at the top of the receiving ranks. Junior Riley Ridley is second on the team with eight catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

In the win over MTSU, a pair of Bulldogs caught their first touchdown pass. Sophomore Jeremiah Holloman snagged three catches for 90 yards and a score while senior Jayson Stanley had a 9-yard touchdown grab.

Junior Tyler Simmons joins Stanley as two of the top contributors on special teams and blockers on offense. Against MTSU, Simmons did not have a catch, but took his only carry 56 yards for a touchdown.

The Bulldog tight ends have shown the ability to block and be options in the passing game. For example, junior Isaac Nauta had a team-high four catches for 47 yards in the victory over the Blue Raiders.

Redshirt sophomore newcomer Demetris Robertson, a native of Savannah, Ga., and graduate of Savannah Christian, arrived in Athens during preseason camp and was cleared to play for Georgia this fall after spending the last two years at the University of California.

Strong Start To 2018

The Bulldog defense will be faced with its toughest test to date at Missouri. Georgia leads the SEC and is ranked second in the SEC, allowing just 8.0 points/game. Missouri enters Saturday's contest averaging 43.7 points/game. The Tigers have won nine consecutive regular season games and scored 40+ points in all of those contests.

The Bulldogs blanked MTSU in the second half en route to a 49-7 win.

Georgia's defense held #24 South Carolina to just 17 points, had a Red Zone stop and an INT in the SEC opener on the road.

The Bulldog defense posted a shutout in the season opener, limiting Austin Peay to 152 total yards (91 rushing, 61 passing) on 50 plays. Previously, Georgia's last shutout came on Sept. 30, 2017 when it beat Tennessee 41-0 in Knoxville. In the first half, the Governors tallied 81 yards and just four first downs.

Looking For Leaders At LB

After losing three starters at linebacker off the 2017 squad to graduation and the NFL, Georgia has senior Juwan Taylor, sophomore Monty Rice, junior Tae Crowder and senior Natrez Patrick vying for playing time at ILB.

In the most recent victory over MTSU, Taylor (six) and Rice (five) combined for 11 tackles to lead the defense. Rice had a career-high eight tackles versus the Gamecocks while Taylor was credited with a touchdown after DB Deandre Baker dropped the ball at the 1 yard line following a 55-yard INT return. *With the loss of OLBs Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy to the NFL, senior OLB D'Andre Walker is emerging as the leader on the outside. He had four tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack, against the Gamecocks. After playing in 41 games leading up to 2018, Walker started his first game in the 2018 season opener and recovered a fumble.

In addition, sophomore Walter Grant also played in 13 games last year and finished with nine stops, including 2.5 tackles for loss from an OLB spot, and will be looked on to continue his development with the Dogs. Grant also got the starting nod for the first time versus APSU at OLB.

Returning Starters Headline Defensive Line Group

The defensive line was effective in the SEC opener at #24 South Carolina by limiting the Gamecocks to 54 rushing yards on 20 attempts.

Veterans Tyler Clark and Jonathan Ledbetter anchor the defensive line.

Behind Clark, Ledbetter and junior Julian Rochester, Georgia is rotating in juniors Michael Barnett, Michail Carter, sophomore Devonte Wyatt, senior DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle and graduate transfer Jay Hayes. Hayes arrived in Athens during the summer after graduating from Notre Dame. He had seven tackles during the Bulldogs' win over the Irish in 2017.

Clark led the front in the Rose Bowl Game win over #2 Oklahoma with five stops, including a sack and two tackles for loss. Clark leads the interior linemen with seven stops, including a TFL, while Ledbetter has six tackles.

Reed, Baker Back To Lead Defensive Backfield

Senior DB Deandre Baker, who has been named a preseason All-American by several outlets, had six stops, two pass breakups and the team's first interception in 2018 (along with a 55-yard return) at #24 South Carolina. He was named the Athlon National Defensive Player of the Week following the contest. He followed that performance up with another pick and a fumble recovery in the win over MTSU.

Georgia also welcomes back junior J.R. Reed. He finished with three tackles against the Gamecocks and had a pick in the end zone to thwart a scoring chance. In the 2018 season opener, Reed was the leading tackler with six stops.

Sophomore Richard LeCounte made his second consecutive start at South Carolina and led the team with a career-high 10 tackles and a pass breakup. During the win over MTSU, he added a fumble recovery and three stops.

The candidates in the secondary who saw action in the first two games included: senior Jarvis Wilson, junior Tyrique Mc- Ghee, sophomores William Poole, Deangelo Gibbs, Mark Webb, redshirt freshman Eric Stokes, freshman Tyson Campbell.

Versus MTSU, the Bulldogs started in the "dime" package, which featured starters Baker, Reed, LeCounte, Webb, Poole and Campbell

Blankenship Back

Preseason All-American candidate PK Rodrigo Blankenship was named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week following his two field goals (44, 45) and five PATs in the 41-17 rout at #24 South Carolina.

Honored as one of 11 players nationwide named to the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for his dedication to the community combined with his on the field performance. The Bulldogs lead the nation with 19 all-time Good Works Team members dating back to 1992.

A season after recording the seventh-best single season completion percentage at 62.2 percent, sophomore QB Jake Fromm is on pace to shatter the school record in 2018.

Common Connection

While the Tigers have a 11 players who hail from the state of Georgia, Missouri's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Derek Dooley has significant ties to Georgia.

Dooley is the son of legendary Bulldog head coach and athletic director Vince Dooley and served on UGA's staff as a graduate assistant in 1996.

In addition to having coaching stints as an assistant at LSU for a total of five years (2000-04), Dooley was also Tennessee's head coach from 2010-12.

This is his first season with the Tigers after serving as the Dallas Cowboys' wide receivers coach from 2013-17.

Record Watch

The Bulldogs are now three games into their 2018 slate and several special teamers are names to watch regarding all-time school career records.

Junior PK Rodrigo Blankenship: 111 touchbacks (UGA record: 169, Kevin Butler, 1981-84) 107 consecutive PATs (UGA record: 119, Blair Walsh, 2008-10)

Freshman P Jake Camarda: 47.4 season avg. (UGA record: 48.1, Drew Butler, 2009)
