Emory Wegener said even she's a little surprised at how her Georgia soccer career has begun: with the freshman goalkeeper starting in goal every game so far. Every game brings new challenges and new experiences, which means she's getting better every time she takes the field.
Wegener, from Johns Creek, Ga., near Atlanta, has made 30 saves thus far, heading into Thursday night's SEC opener against Arkansas. She sat down for a Quick Chat on Wednesday and talked about adjusting to college, what she's watching and much more.
Here's some of what she had to say:Â
Frierson: How are you adjusting to college life so far? Is it about what you expected?
Wegener: I think I'm adjusting pretty good. It's a lot more than I expected, like our schedules are really busy — you've just got to get used to it.
Frierson: What about playing at this level, what has that been like?
Wegener: It's about what I expected, I guess, but every day is a new day and I'm just getting used to it and getting in the groove of things.
Frierson: What do you do when you're not studying or training or playing games?
Wegener: I sleep (laughs), I mean any chance I get I'm either sleeping or hanging out with friends.
Frierson: How surprised are you to be playing and starting every game? What were your expectations coming in?
Wegener: I'm definitely surprised, but happy of course.Â
Frierson: Can you already tell that you're a better player than you were when you took the field for that first game?
Wegener: I think for sure, every game and practice I'm gaining more experience.
Frierson: Where would you go if you were given all the time and money you needed to travel anywhere in the world?
Wegener: I've always wanted to go to Greece, just because whenever I see pictures of it it looks so beautiful.
Frierson: What's something you could eat every day and never get tired of it?
Wegener: Probably the Chick-fil-A breakfast — those minis, they're really good.
Frierson: What's something that could disappear from your plate forever?
Wegener: I don't know, probably anything raw. If it's raw I just don't want to deal with it.
Frierson: What's the best movie or show you've seen in the last few years?
Wegener: One movie I've been watching is "Baby Driver"; that was a really good one. As for TV, I don't really watch much.
Frierson: Do you do anything creative? Or is there anything creative you wish you could do?
Wegener: I like music and am really into music, but I can't make music. If I could do that, that would be really cool.
Frierson: Is there a particular instrument you'd like to be able to play or would you like to be able to sing well?
Wegener: I definitely would want to be able to sing, and maybe play the piano or drums or something like that.
Frierson: Who's the funniest person on the team?
Wegener: There are so many funny people — maybe Jess [Jessie] Harvey. She's really funny and we get along really well. I like her a lot. Or Bella, Bella Ponzi, she's really funny too.
Frierson: Is there one thing you have to take with you on every road trip?
Wegener: Headphones, I don't think I could do it without headphones.
Frierson: If you could be great at any other sport for a day just to experience it, what sport would you choose?
Wegener: Tennis. When I was little I played a lot of tennis, like in the neighborhood league, and that was fun. My family's really into tennis so I think I would enjoy that.
