Bulldogs Stand Third In The Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. --- The Georgia men's golf team stands third after one round of The Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

On Friday on the par-72 layout covering 6,828 yards, the Bulldogs carded an 8-under 352. Oklahoma opened with a blistering 20-under 340, 10 shots clear of Oklahoma State and 12 ahead of the Bulldogs. The Cowboys and the Sooners are the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the country, while the Bulldogs are unranked.

Freshman Trent Phillips, making his collegiate debut, paced the Bulldogs as he signed for a 4-under 68 to land fifth individually. Phillips, who made birdies on five of his first 11 holes on Friday, is four shy of Oklahoma's Garett Reband (8-under 64).

Sophomore Davis Thompson followed at 2-under 70 for 16th, while redshirt junior Tye Waller and junior Spencer Ralston each added a 1-under 71 for 19th, and sophomore John Hilliard Catanzaro posted an even-par 72. Junior Trevor Phillips had the Bulldogs' non-counting score of 6-over 78.

The Carmel Cup will continue on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday. Tee times, pairings and live results are available at golfstat.com.
