Bulldog Track & Field Hauls In Two SEC Weekly Awards

April 10, 2018 | Track & Field

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia track and field's Keturah Orji and Johannes Erm have earned Southeastern Conference weekly awards following their performances at the Spec Towns Invitational and Bulldog Decathlon/Heptathlon, according to a league announcement.

Orji was named the Freshman of the Week once outdoors in 2015 and the outdoor Field Athlete of the Year once in 2016.  She also the league's outdoor Freshman Field Athlete of the Year in 2015 and the Field Athlete of the Year in 2016 and 2017 outdoors.

Erm was the SEC Men's Freshman Field Athlete of the Year after capturing the 2018 SEC heptathlon title indoors.  This marks Georgia's fourth and fifth weekly awards of the outdoor season.

Orji, a native of Mount Olive, N.J., opened in the long jump with the No. 4 worldwide mark this season to secure the No. 2 NCAA qualifying spot.  Her winning jump of 22 feet, ¼ inches at the Spec Towns Invitational bested reigning NCAA indoor/outdoor long jump champion Kate Hall, 2018 indoor NCAA bronze medalist Tara Davis (both Lady Bulldogs) and South Carolina's Rougui Sow, who went 22 feet last year at the meet.  Orji's mark of 22-0.25 matches her No. 2 spot in school history behind Hall (22-1).

Erm, a native Tallinn, Estonia, debuted in his first collegiate decathlon with the No. 5 mark worldwide this year as the No. 3 NCAA performer this season.  He scored 8,020 points at the Bulldog Heptathlon/Decathlon and leads the country's closest freshman by more than 1,200 points.  Erm finished third behind Kentucky's Tim Duckworth, the 2018 NCAA indoor heptathlon champion, and 2016 Olympian and former Bulldog NCAA champion Maicel Uibo, who won the meet with a world leading score of 8,407.

Erm became just the fifth Bulldog decathlete to break 8,000 points in school history, a feat that has only ever been accomplished since 2015 at Georgia.  He now ranks No. 5 in school history in the event behind teammate Karl Saluri.

Georgia travels to the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, Calif., on April 19-21.
